Overcoming Unbelief: Spiritual Impediments and Divine Truth
How does unbelief hinder one's connection with divine truth?
Unbelieve
AdventAI
Unbelief is a significant spiritual impediment, often arising from skepticism and cherished doubts, which can harden the heart and hinder one's connection with divine truth and God's grace 🙏.
The Nature and Manifestation of Unbelief
Origin and Development Unbelief often stems from educating oneself in skepticism and cherishing doubts, weaving questioning into one's experience. It can also be influenced by unfavorable circumstances, indicating deeper spiritual problems and neglect of personal piety and secret prayer.
Expression and Diffusion A law of God reveals that ideas and convictions seek expression. Similarly, anyone who cherishes unbelief and criticism will inevitably diffuse that spirit, striving to make a place for themselves and gain adherents.
Resistance to Light Unbelief creates an "impregnable wall" in the heart, preventing the light of truth from shining in. It can cause individuals to become unsusceptible to the truth, leading to an erroneous education and a molding of character after false standards. This resistance to light can even prevent seeing clearly again unless hearts are humbled and backslidings confessed.
Impact on Spiritual Life Unbelief is considered infinitely the most irrational form of incredulity. It indicates a great distance from Jesus and a neglect of personal devotion. Such a condition can lead to wavering faith and a "religion of circumstance" that collapses when adversity strikes. It also prevents one from receiving the free, everlasting treasures of eternal love that are available to those who come as little children to Jesus, laying all doubt and unbelief aside.
Hindrance to God's Work Unbelief can actively hinder God's work and purposes. It can be inspired by Satan to discourage believers and turn people away from God's messengers. Historically, the unbelief of God's chosen people has caused Him to turn away from them, manifesting Himself instead to those in heathen lands who lived up to the light they had.
Consequences of Cherishing Unbelief
Spiritual Weakness and Failure Unbelief can make one so "light" with fear and unbelief that they are found wanting when weighed in the balance, preventing them from entering the "goodly land". It causes a departure from faith and can lead to giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, as warned in 1 Timothy 4:1.
Dishonor to God Cherishing the "sin of unbelief" dishonors our Master and keeps us from the source of strength. It can also lead individuals who were once blessed by God, even being returned from the brink of death, to forget Him and live dissolute lives, failing to honor and glorify Him.
Obstacle to Blessings When there is unbelief and sin, God cannot do much for His people, as these conditions shut them away from Him. It leads to the cessation of spiritual gifts, which might otherwise be manifested if people attained to primitive faith and practice.
Historical Examples The Jewish leaders in Christ's time, through their interpretations, effectively denied essential truths and sowed infidelity, robbing God's word of its power and allowing evil spirits to work their will. The disciples themselves experienced remorse because they allowed prevailing unbelief to leaven their opinions and becloud their understanding of Christ's true identity. Unbelieving Israel ultimately sided with the great apostate.
Overcoming Unbelief
Confession and Acceptance When under conviction of the Spirit, it becomes a personal duty to confess unbelief, open hearts to accept light, and throw oneself by faith from doubt to faith, consecrating unreservedly to God.
Drawing Nigh to God Being much with the Lord in prayer is essential, for when one draws nigh to God, God will draw nigh to them.
Wholehearted Love and Faith Loving the Lord with all one's heart, soul, mind, and strength, as stated in Mark 12:30 is the highest sanctified ambition demanded of believers and a key to overcoming unbelief. We are assured that God's grace is sufficient, so we should never talk doubt and unbelief, but instead be energetic, for there is no half-and-half service in pure religion 2 Corinthians 12:9.
Childlike Trust Laying all doubt and unbelief aside and coming as a little child to the feet of Jesus opens the door to receiving all the treasures of eternal love.
Steady Faith and Will Submission Cultivating steady faith, implicit confidence, and a disposition to receive God's word in its plain meaning is crucial. In prayer, our desires should be lost in God's purpose, acknowledging His will rather than commanding Him to concede to ours. Our faith becomes firmer and more reliable when we commit our desires to the all-wise God with unfeverish anxiety and perfect confidence.
Breaking Chains Never despairing of a brother's recovery and reformation, we should make our requests known to God and not let go until the tempted one breaks the cords of unbelief, knowing that the conflict will end in victory 🙏.
Not Hardening the Heart It is paramount not to harden our hearts, as the Holy Spirit warns in Hebrews 3:7-8 lest we, like the children of Israel, perish in the wilderness because of unbelief of God's word and fail to enter the promised land. We must receive divine truth into our hearts, allowing them to break before God, for He receives a broken heart and a contrite spirit. We must know for a surety that Christ is formed within us, the hope of glory, and that the Spirit of God abides in our hearts, allowing communion with God.
