1 John 1:15-17

To love not the world is a divine command that protects the soul from the spiritual ruin caused by carnal desires and worldly pride 1 John 2:15. This passage serves as a definitive measure of a person's character and their allegiance to the Father.

The Meaning of Worldliness

The "world" represents the natural heart in its state of enmity against God, characterized by the fruits of the flesh and unrenewed carnal desires. While the world may appear gentlemanly, refined, or polished, it often lacks moral power and is influenced by Satan, who can transform himself into an angel of light. Friendship with such a world is equivalent to enmity with God James 4:4.

The Three Great Temptations

The apostle classifies the contents of the world into three categories that summarize every form of idolatry and sin 1 John 2:16:

  • The Lust of the Flesh: This includes the indulgence of appetite, intemperance, and the gratification of lower passions. It acts as a "god" for those who mind earthly things, leading to physical and spiritual destruction Philippians 3:18-19.

  • The Lust of the Eyes: This is often manifested in a love for dress, showy appearance, and the purchase of frivolous things to gratify vanity. It blinds the mind to spiritual light and consumes means that should be used for God’s cause.

  • The Pride of Life: This encompasses ambition, self-exaltation, and the thirst for power or position. It is seen in racial or class distinctions and the worship of riches (Mammon), which are all forms of vanity and idolatry.

The Incompatibility of Two Loves

It is a spiritual impossibility to love both the world and the Father simultaneously.

  • A Divided Heart: You cannot serve God and Mammon; if the heart is filled with the love of the world, there is no room for the love of God or the graces of His Spirit Matthew 6:24.

  • A Test of Faith: The love of the world often predominates in the minds of the young, leading to frivolity and fashion that dishonor God.

  • Allegiance: Seeking to be a citizen of the heavenly kingdom requires renouncing all allegiance to the potentates and fashions of this world.

The Remedy: Transformation and Sacrifice

The only way to overcome the power of the world is through the force of the gospel and the grace of Christ.

  • Separation: God calls His people to be separate and peculiar, shunning the company of those who draw the soul away from Him 2 Corinthians 6:17.

  • Renewal of Mind: Conformity to the world is prevented by feeding on the word of God and being transformed by the renewing of the mind Romans 12:2.

  • Eternal Perspective: While the world and its lusts are passing away, the person who does the will of God will abide forever, inheriting an immortal and incorruptible kingdom 1 John 2:17.

  • Christ's Example: Jesus encountered and overcame these very temptations—the test of appetite, the love of the world, and the pride of display—to provide a righteous character for those who follow Him.

Living for self and the treasures of this earth brings a harvest of corruption and many sorrows 1 Timothy 6:9-10. True exaltation is found only in Jesus Christ, where the soul finds rest by taking His easy yoke and laying down the wearisome load of worldly pride.
