Understanding What it Means to Pray in Jesus' Name
Is praying in Jesus' name just a phrase, or a state of heart?
In the book steps to Christ Ellen White mentions praying Jesus name at the beginning and ending of a prayer. I’ve only ever prayed in Jesus name at the end and began with Our Father. How does it work if we need to use Jesus name at the beginning also

To pray in the name of Jesus is a deep spiritual experience that involves far more than simply repeating His name as a formal phrase at the start or conclusion of your petitions. While many traditionally use His name to close a prayer, the true essence of praying in His name means approaching the Father in the mind and spirit of Jesus, believing His promises, relying on His grace, and living out His works.
Understanding Prayer in Jesus' Name
The Spirit of Prayer: Praying in the name of Jesus means your heart is in harmony with His character and will. It is the opening of the heart to God as to a friend, not to inform Him of who we are, but to enable us to receive Him.
The Father's Love: Jesus Himself clarified that He does not need to plead with the Father on our behalf because the Father Himself loves us deeply John 16:26-27.
A Daily Consecration: Rather than focusing on where the name is placed, focus on a daily surrender where you lay your plans at His feet each morning and ask Him to abide with you.
The Role of Faith and Sincerity
The effectiveness of your prayer is not found in a specific word count or the repetition of a title, but in the sincerity of the soul.
Faith in the Promise: When you ask for blessings, believe that you receive them because God has promised, just as the paralytic at Bethesda acted on Christ's word and received power to walk Mark 11:24.
The Key of Faith: Prayer is the key in the hand of faith to unlock heaven's storehouse, where the boundless resources of the Almighty are kept for us.
Access to the Father: Through the merits of Jesus, the gulf that sin made has been bridged, and we can now have constant communion with God.
Practical Steps for Your Prayer Life
You can continue to address the Father as you have been doing, but you may choose to enrich your experience by focusing on these principles:
Approach with Confidence: Come to God just as you are—sinful, helpless, and dependent—and believe that it is His glory to encircle you in His love.
Constant Communion: You can have the door of your heart open continually, sending up silent petitions for guidance throughout your daily labor, just as Nehemiah did before the king.
A Forgiving Spirit: Ensure that as you ask for mercy, you also carry a spirit of love and forgiveness toward others in your own heart Matthew 6:12.
Persistence: Do not be discouraged if answers are not immediate; continue in prayer and watch with thanksgiving, trusting that God is too wise to err and too good to withhold any good thing from those who walk uprightly Colossians 4:2.
Ultimately, the most important "step" is to let self be lost in Him, talking and thinking of Jesus so that your life is molded after His. As you contemplate His matchless love and infinite sacrifice, your prayers will naturally become more fervent, intelligent, and acceptable to God.
