Purpose-Driven Pursuits: Returning to Your First Love

Are your 'purpose-driven pursuits' truly driven by Christ's love?

Revelations 2:1-5 study and relate with a sermon I’m making for Adventist Medical Student Network with theme Purpose-Driven Pursuits

AdventAI

Revelation 2:1-5

1 To the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things says he that holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks in the middle of the seven golden candlesticks;

2 I know your works, and your labor, and your patience, and how you can not bear them which are evil: and you have tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and have found them liars:

3 And have borne, and have patience, and for my name’s sake have labored, and have not fainted.

4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against you, because you have left your first love.

5 Remember therefore from where you are fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come to you quickly, and will remove your candlestick out of his place, except you repent.

Absolutely! I can help you craft both a sermon and a sermon outline for the Adventist Medical Student Network, focusing on Revelation 2:1-5 and the theme of "Purpose-Driven Pursuits." Let's get those ideas flowing!

AdventAI

My beloved students of the Adventist Medical Student Network, faculty, and dear friends, it is a profound privilege to gather with you today under the banner of "Purpose-Driven Pursuits." In a world bustling with ambitions and demanding endeavors, it is vital to anchor our pursuits in an eternal purpose. Our text for today comes from the very heart of Jesus, spoken to His church in Revelation:

"To the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things says he that holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; I know your works, and your labor, and your patience, and how you cannot bear them which are evil: and you have tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and have found them liars: and have borne, and have patience, and for my name's sake have labored, and have not fainted. Nevertheless I have somewhat against you, because you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come to you quickly, and will remove your candlestick out of his place." Revelation 2:1-5.

What a powerful, direct, and incredibly relevant message for us today, especially for those of you dedicating your lives to the noble calling of healing!

🧸 The Forgotten Teddy Bear: A Children's Story

Imagine a little girl named Lily who had a very special teddy bear. She named him "Buddy." Buddy was her first love among toys. She carried him everywhere, whispered all her secrets to him, and he was always there to comfort her. Buddy was soft, worn, and smelled faintly of her favorite blanket. Then, for her birthday, Lily received a dazzling, remote-controlled robot. It had flashing lights, could walk, and even talk! Lily was completely captivated. She spent hours every day playing with the robot, showing it off to her friends. Buddy, her beloved teddy bear, was left in a corner, collecting dust, forgotten. Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. One day, the robot broke, and Lily was heartbroken. As she sat alone, sad and lonely, her eyes fell upon Buddy in the corner. She slowly walked over, picked him up, and hugged him. Immediately, she felt a warmth and comfort that the robot had never provided. She remembered how much she loved Buddy, and a pang of regret filled her heart for neglecting him. She realized that while the robot was exciting and new, Buddy was the one who truly held her heart.

Dear friends, this simple story illustrates a profound truth for us. We can get caught up in the excitement of new pursuits, dazzling knowledge, and intense labor, and in doing so, inadvertently leave behind our "first love."

🌟 Christ's Intimate Knowledge and Commendation

Jesus begins by affirming His intimate connection with His church and its workers: "These things says he that holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks" Revelation 2:1. He is deeply involved in His work, and He knows every detail, every effort, every struggle.

He then commends the Ephesians: "I know your works, and your labor, and your patience, and how you cannot bear them which are evil: and you have tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and have found them liars: and have borne, and have patience, and for my name's sake have labored, and have not fainted." Revelation 2:2-3. This is a powerful acknowledgment of their diligence, their hard work, and their faithfulness in discerning truth from error.

As medical students and future healthcare professionals, this commendation speaks volumes to your rigorous dedication. You are investing countless hours in study, research, and practical application. You endure sleepless nights, demanding schedules, and immense pressure. This commitment, this intellectual strength and disciplined effort, is precious in God's sight, when consecrated to Him. Our sanitariums, our offices of publication, and our schools are all vital parts of God's great plan, His helping hand in restoring health and relieving suffering, and He is especially interested in the institutions consecrated to the advancement of His work. The excellence of character that you possess must be the result of your own effort, cultivating your God-given talents. Thoroughness and promptness in your studies and work are not just academic requirements, but lessons that contribute to a lifetime of faithful service.

💔 The Lost "First Love"

Yet, amidst this commendation, comes a sobering indictment: "Nevertheless I have somewhat against you, because you have left your first love." Revelation 2:4. This is a critical warning for all of us, and especially for those in intense, demanding fields like medicine. What does it mean to leave your first love?

It means that while the actions may still be present – the works, the labor, the patience, even the fight against evil – the motive has shifted. A legal religion, one actuated by a self-justifying spirit, can never lead souls to Christ; it is a loveless, Christless religion. The atmosphere of the church, or in our case, the heart, can become frigid, losing that warmth of first love, that deep, fervent charity and tenderness.

For a medical student, it could mean that while you pursue your studies diligently, the initial fervent desire to serve God and relieve suffering with Christ's compassion might subtly give way to a zeal for self-advancement, recognition, or worldly success. You might be mastering the science, but neglecting the spirituality. You might be excelling in your profession, but your heart is not as close to God as it once was. You could be converted to the theory of the truth, but not truly converted to God. Your personal piety, the quiet communion with God, the seasons for contemplation and fervent prayer, might be neglected.

We are all woven into the great "web of humanity," and our every action, word, and spirit exerts an influence. If our "first love" is gone, our influence, no matter how outwardly impressive, lacks divine power. We cannot truly be Christlike if we continue to feed our minds on anything that detracts from spiritual strength or cultivates worldly associations.

Furthermore, we must always guard our physical health, for the body is the temple of God. The brain and nervous system are the only medium through which Heaven communicates with us. Unbalanced nervous systems, caused by overworking the mind or body, or indulging in stimulating foods and drinks like tea or coffee, can dull moral perceptions and make it harder to receive divine impressions and exercise self-control. The care of your physical habitation is a sacred obligation, enabling you to glorify God and perform the work He has given you.

💖 The Call to Remember, Repent, and Return

But there is hope! Jesus calls us to a three-fold action: "Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent, and do the first works" Revelation 2:5.

  1. Remember: Think back to that initial passion, that pure joy, that selfless dedication when you first embraced Christ or felt the call to serve Him in this unique way. Remember the sweetness of His presence, the clarity of His purpose for your life.

  2. Repent: This is not mere regret, but a change of mind and heart, leading to a change of direction. It means acknowledging any departure from God's way and seeking to align with His will. It means letting go of selfish ambitions and carnal pursuits.

  3. Do the first works: What were those "first works" for the early church? They were seen when believers sought out friends, relatives, and acquaintances, and with hearts overflowing with love, told the story of what Jesus was to them and what they were to Jesus. This is true medical missionary work – not just healing the body, but also the mind and saving the soul. It means having a burden of soul to find those lost to Christ, making earnest, self-sacrificing efforts to save sinners. Angels of God will cooperate with those who are engaged in this work, giving opportunities which many have never had.

As future medical professionals, your purpose-driven pursuit is not merely to acquire knowledge and skill, but to be instruments in God's hands. You are to combine the medical missionary work with the ministry of the Word, communicating light and presenting the gospel to all classes of society. God wants the world to see that business can be carried on in accordance with His principles, marking the character of Christ.

This work requires developing a spotless character, formed by stern efforts to resist temptation, united with prayerful meditation and a grand purpose. It means cultivating tact and courtesy, manifesting the spirit of Christ, and never ceasing to learn and grow upward. You are to be faithful in what is least, knowing that faithfulness in little things leads to faithfulness in much Luke 16:10.

The enemy, Satan, is actively weaving complicated webs of restless passion, earthly lust, pride, and selfishness to blind, corrupt, and deceive mankind. He uses secret societies, human laws, and worldly policies to draw people away from God's commandments. We must be separate, peculiar people, bearing the banner of God's commandments and the faith of Jesus.

The harmonious relation of truth, like links in a chain, expands and clarifies as the mind is quickened by the Spirit of God. But Satan also prepares "a long chain of circumstances, like links in a chain," to prevent us from standing where we should. We are called to be a "chain of living witnesses" carrying the invitation of salvation to the world Revelation 22:17.

🙏 An Urgent Appeal

"Or else I will come to you quickly, and will remove your candlestick out of his place." Revelation 2:5. To have our candlestick removed means to lose the light of God's presence, His Spirit, and our ability to reflect His glory. What a solemn thought! We are living in days of peril, and Christ alone can help us and give us the victory.

My dear friends, especially those of you in the Adventist Medical Student Network, I urge you to ponder this message. As you pursue your demanding studies, ask yourselves:

  • Am I allowing the sheer volume of intellectual pursuit to eclipse my deep, fervent love for Jesus?

  • Am I nurturing my personal relationship with Christ daily, or have I become absorbed in worldly interests?

  • Are my "purpose-driven pursuits" truly driven by Christ's love for souls, or by a desire for self-advancement?

  • Am I taking care of my physical body, the temple of the Holy Spirit, so that my mind and moral perceptions are clear to receive divine impressions?

  • Am I actively engaging in the "first works"—sharing the story of Jesus with those around me, especially the lost and suffering, with hearts overflowing with love?

The science of salvation is the most important burden of every sermon. Christ on the cross of Calvary reveals the boundless, exhaustless love of God, a love that heals our souls and empowers us to love others. This is the mystery of godliness: that fallen humanity can be conformed to the image of the Son of God, loved by the Father even as He loved His Son. This manifestation of love should be the groundwork of every sermon, the central theme that convicts sinners and draws them to Him.

Let us not be found among those who have lost their first love. Let us remember, repent, and return to those first works. Let Jesus be lifted higher and higher, the central theme of our lives. His law, the royal law, shows us our need for Him, detecting sin, but His love on the cross draws us to Him. He seeks your whole heart, your deepest affections, your purpose, your pursuits.

Will you, today, recommit your studies, your career, your very lives, to Jesus Christ? Will you choose to keep Him as your first love, allowing His Spirit to permeate every aspect of your "Purpose-Driven Pursuits"? Will you, with renewed zeal, go forth to seek and save the lost, both physically and spiritually? What are you going to do?

May God bless you as you answer this call. Amen.
