Isaiah 40:31

31 But they that wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

AdventAI

It is truly wonderful to explore the profound meaning behind Isaiah 40:31 our key text for this theme of "Renewing Our Vision." This verse offers immense comfort and strength, assuring us that those who patiently trust in the Lord will find their vigor restored, enabling them to soar like eagles, run without tiring, and walk without faltering.

The Promise of Renewed Strength

The essence of Isaiah 40:31 is a divine promise of renewed strength for those who "wait on the Lord." This isn't merely passive waiting, but an active, trusting reliance on God's unwavering power and understanding.

  • Divine Power: The Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, never faints nor grows weary; His understanding is boundless. He generously gives power to the weak and increases strength for those who have no might. This creative and restorative power is the very foundation of our hope in His salvation. It is by God's power that planets are kept in their courses, and this same power is available to the faint.

  • Steadfastness in Faith: To "wait on the Lord" implies a steadfastness of purpose. This means having a firm resolve not to deviate from God's law, much like Daniel, who, despite serving in a powerful court, purposed in his heart to obey God. This kind of waiting strengthens our faith through continuous exercise, allowing patience to complete its perfect work.

  • Overcoming Weariness: The world is full of worn-out people, burdened by countless steps, both profitable and otherwise. To them, the Lord promises rest. Matthew 11:28 When we are guided by the Lord, we will not grow weary or faint.

Mounting Up with Wings as Eagles

The imagery of "mounting up with wings as eagles" beautifully illustrates the upliftment and spiritual renewal granted to those who wait upon the Lord.

  • Symbol of Strength and Vision: The eagle is known for its keen sight, great strength, and elevation of flight, often called the king of birds. This symbolizes the renewed vigor and clear spiritual vision that believers receive.

  • Learning Through Adversity: Just as an eagle teaches its young to fly by forcing them out of the nest and catching them when they falter, the Lord teaches His people through adversity. He encourages them to use the strength He provides and to depend on Him for more. This process strengthens our faith and leads us to rely more heavily on our Divine Support and Strength.

  • Spiritual Ascent: This promise speaks to the ability to rise above earthly struggles and difficulties. When we are firmly rooted in Christ, our Rock of Ages, we can withstand storms of temptation and maintain an unwavering faith. We can press forward with renewed strength and ardor, ultimately entering into the celestial city.

Running and Walking Without Fainting

The promise that "they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint" highlights enduring strength for both urgent and sustained efforts.

  • Daily Conversion: Our journey requires daily conversion to God, where all our words and deeds reflect submission to His will. This transforming power of the Holy Spirit allows us to become His effective agents.

  • Consecration and Guidance: The Lord will do much for His people if they willingly consecrate themselves to Him. We are to seek God, emptied of self, to be in a favorable position to be taught. When we seek counsel from God with sanctified reason, we are guided by Him.

  • Progressive Path: The path of the just is a progressive one, moving from strength to strength, grace to grace, and glory to glory. Each lesson from Christ prepares our hearts for more instruction, drawing us ever closer to heaven. This ongoing journey means we are constantly fighting the good fight of faith, not assuming a time of security has arrived.

Building on the Rock

Our theme song, "We'll Build on the Rock," perfectly complements this vision of renewed strength and enduring faith.

  • Christ as the Foundation: Jesus Christ is our chief corner-stone, the only sure foundation upon which we can securely build. This foundation is broad and strong enough for all, sustaining the weight of the whole world.

  • Living Stones: By connecting with Christ, the living stone, we ourselves become living stones, prepared for God's temple. This transformation is a genuine conversion, leading to new purposes and moral tastes, overcoming defects of character.

  • Enduring the Storm: A house built upon the rock of God's Word will stand firm against any tempest and flood, because the living Word makes the building and foundation one. Matthew 7:24-25 In contrast, building on sand, or professing to keep God's law while walking contrary to its principles, leads to a complete wreck. Matthew 7:26-27

  • Holistic Transformation: The true object of education is to restore the image of God in the soul, bringing us back to the perfection in which we were first created. This holistic transformation, including mental, social, and spiritual improvement, refines our character and prepares us for higher Christian attainments.

Let us embrace the promise of renewed strength by waiting on the Lord, allowing His Spirit to transform us into living stones, firmly built upon the Rock of Ages, so we can run and walk without faintness in His service.

Renewing Our Vision: Building on the Rock 🕊️

Theme: Renewing Our Vision

Theme Song: We'll Build on the Rock

Key Text: Isaiah 40:31

Speaker: Rwoti O. Aruya

Beloved brothers and sisters, as we gather today, let us reflect on the theme of "Renewing Our Vision," grounded in the powerful words of Isaiah 40:31: "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." These words of hope and promise beckon us to draw closer to our Savior, to rebuild our lives upon the foundation that is Jesus Christ.

A Children's Story: The Little House That Stood Firm 🏡

Once upon a time, there were two little children who wanted to build houses. One child chose a sandy spot near the ocean, thinking it was soft and easy to work with. The other chose a rocky hill, which seemed harder to build on. The child who built on the sand finished quickly, and their house looked beautiful. The other child worked slowly and carefully, placing each stone just right on the rocky hill. Then the storms came, the waves crashed. The little house on the sand was swept away, but the house on the rock stood firm! You see, friends, like those little children, we must always build our lives upon Jesus, the Rock, who is so reliable. Then we can always triumph.

The Foundation of Our Strength: Abiding in Christ ❤️

Today, we will consider another cornerstone of our faith journey: the profound truth found in John 15:4-5:

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abides in me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing.”

These verses reveal that we cannot expect to be truly holy, worthy or productive without a direct and ongoing relationship with Jesus, and as such the science of salvation should be our central focus in our lives. This key principle is the secret to renewing our vision and building a life that endures.

What Does it Mean to Abide? 🍇

To abide in Christ is to dwell in Him, to make our home in His love and truth. It is more than just a fleeting visit; it's about setting up a permanent residence in His presence. Here's what abiding looks like:

  • Constant Communion: Like the vine branch constantly drawing sap, we must cling to Jesus, receiving from Him the strength and perfection of His character.

  • Surrender: Abiding in Christ means a life of unreserved surrender to His service choosing only His disposition so that His interests become our own.

  • Obedience: Just as Christ kept His Father's commandments and abode in His love, we must also keep His commandments to abide in His love John 15:10.

Why is Abiding Necessary? 🤔

In the natural world, you cannot separate a branch from it's vine and expect it to live and flourish. In the same way, we are completely dependent on Christ for all things, just as is the branch upon the parent stock for growth and fruitfulness. Without Him, we lack the power to resist temptation or grow in grace and holiness.

Christ is the Foundation 🌟

The theme song, "We'll Build on the Rock," echoes the vital necessity of building our lives on a firm foundation. What is this rock? It is none other than Jesus Christ, the chief cornerstone! To build on anything else is to build on sinking sand. Matthew 7:26

What does it mean to build on Jesus? 🏗️

  • Rejecting False Foundations: Error comes into our ranks, and we must lead people from their fancful and erroneous ideas to truth. Open, unmasked error was supplanting the faith of the gospel in the Galatian churches.

  • Foundational Truth: The foundation of our faith and hope originates in this Seed that is Christ.

  • Christ our Righteousness: The foundation of Christianity is "Christ our Righteousness" and we must act as God acts upon us, not as another human mind acts upon our mind, for if this method of indirect influence is kept up, souls cannot be impressed and directed by the great I AM.

Bearing Fruit: The Evidence of Abiding 🍎

When we are vitally connected to Jesus, the True Vine, we cannot help but bear fruit. This is not a forced effort but a natural outflowing of the life within.

  • The Fruit of the Spirit: Like the branch is nourished by the sap which flows from the parent stock, so the believer in Christ is sustained by the life of Christ and the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance Galatians 5:22-23.

  • Right Actions: Right actions are the unmistakable fruit of true godliness, and those who bear no fruit of this kind reveal that they have no experience in the things of God. If we claim to follow Christ, but do not obey His commandments, our claims are without foundation. We must align our lives with His teachings and be doers of the Word, not hearers only.

  • Our Words and Works: We are a branch of the True Vine; thus, if our tastes and interests are identical to Christ's our light will show to the world in missionary work, good works, with an eye single to God’s glory.

A Constant Choice ✅

To abide in Christ requires a constant choice to surrender our will to His. It's a daily decision to prioritize His purposes above our own desires, a constant process which creates new purposes and new moral tastes.

  • Humility: It means learning meekness and lowliness of heart in Christ's school. If we fall on the Rock Christ Jesus then we will be broken and have the mind of Christ with no disposition to exercise vain assumption of authority.

  • Reliance on His Merits: We must fall all helpless and suffering and needy upon the Rock of Christ, feeling in our inmost soul that our victory depends upon His merits, that all our efforts of themselves, without the special help of the great Conqueror, will be without avail,

  • Bearing the Cross: Bearing the cross signifies living a life of self-denial, labor and conflict so we may reach the standard of children of God, who are noble, pure, holy, and undefiled.

The Call to Action 📣

My brothers and sisters, I urge you today to consider these solemn words: "Without me, ye can do nothing" John 15:5.

  • Where Do You Stand?: Are you building your life on the shifting sands of worldly pleasures, on the approval of others, or on your own strength?

  • Fall on the Rock: I implore you to choose Christ, to choose life, and to fall upon the Rock, Christ Jesus. There is so much need to be convicted and converted, to cut away from our lives supreme selfishness, because our only hope is to fall upon the Rock Christ Jesus and be broken.

  • An Invitation to the Weary: If you feel heavy-laden, know that his love and His pardon are free to be received and enjoyed when you come to Him in close fellowship Matthew 11:28. Unbroken communion with Christ gives an assurance of rest.

  • Answer God's Call: Christ is calling you to follow Him, will you deny yourself, take up His cross, and follow him? Let us be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

May God grant us the wisdom and strength to renew our vision, to build our lives upon the Rock that is Christ, and to abide in Him so that we may bear much fruit, to the glory of our Father. Let us live our lives so fully devoted to Christ, that we may declare with Paul: "The life that I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."
