Revelation 13

1 And I stood on the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads the name of blasphemy.

2 And the beast which I saw was like to a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.

4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power to the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like to the beast? who is able to make war with him?

5 And there was given to him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given to him to continue forty and two months.

6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

7 And it was given to him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

8 And all that dwell on the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.

10 He that leads into captivity shall go into captivity: he that kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spoke as a dragon.

12 And he exercises all the power of the first beast before him, and causes the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

13 And he does great wonders, so that he makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

14 And deceives them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

15 And he had power to give life to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

16 And he causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

18 Here is wisdom. Let him that has understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred three score and six.

Revelation 13 provides a profound prophetic history of two global powers—symbolized by a beast from the sea and a beast from the earth—that unite in the final days to enforce false worship and oppose God’s people. 🌟

The First Beast: The Papacy

The first part of the chapter describes a beast rising out of the sea with seven heads and ten horns Revelation 13:1.

  • Identity and Power: This beast represents the Papal Hierarchy, a mixed power of spiritual and temporal authority that received its seat and great authority from Pagan Rome Revelation 13:2. It is characterized by names of blasphemy and a period of supremacy lasting 1,260 years Revelation 13:5-6.

  • The Deadly Wound: This power received a "deadly wound" in 1798 when the French army took the Pope into captivity Revelation 13:3. However, the prophecy declares this wound would be healed, resulting in a restoration of its global political and religious influence Revelation 13:3.

  • Universal Worship: Eventually, all whose names are not written in the Lamb’s book of life will worship this power Revelation 13:8.

The Second Beast: The United States

Following the first beast's captivity, a second beast arises from the earth with two horns like a lamb, but it eventually speaks like a dragon Revelation 13:11.

  • Rise and Character: Unlike the first beast that rose through the "winds" of war and strife upon the "sea" of populated nations, this power grows up quietly in a relatively unpopulated area Daniel 7:2. This symbolizes the United States of America, which began with principles of civil and religious liberty.

  • Deceptive Miracles: This power performs great wonders, even making fire come down from heaven, to deceive the inhabitants of the earth Revelation 13:13-14.

  • The Image to the Beast: The second beast persuades the people to make an "image" to the first beast—a replica of the papal system where religious power controls the civil government to enforce its decrees Revelation 13:14.

The Final Conflict and the Mark

The union of these two powers leads to a global crisis involving enforced worship and economic boycotts.

  • Enforcement of the Mark: The image of the beast demands that everyone receive a "mark" in their right hand or forehead Revelation 13:16. This mark is the sign of papal authority—specifically the observance of a man-made sabbath in place of the true Sabbath of GodEze 20:20.

  • Economic and Death Decrees: Those who refuse this mark will be unable to buy or sell and will eventually face a decree of death Revelation 13:15, 17.

  • The Victory of the Saints: Despite this intense pressure, God's remnant people remain faithful. They are characterized by keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus Revelation 14:12. Ultimately, they are seen standing victorious on the sea of glass, having overcome the beast, his image, his mark, and the number of his name Revelation 15:2.

The most solemn warning in the Bible is given against receiving this mark, urging all to worship the Creator instead Revelation 14:7-10. 🙏
