Biblical Perspectives on Salvation and Deliverance from Spirits
Can a person enter eternal salvation while harboring an unclean spirit?
"It's true that Christians can have unclean spirits, eg, the man in the synagogue with the unclean spirit. Can a person still be saved if they have unclean spirits?" I'm unclear if this person is asking whether you can make it to heaven if you're unwittingly/unwillingly under the influence/temptation of an unclean spirit/s, or something else, but I thought I'd reach out to hear what others say. I want to answer this person strictly with what the Bible says.

A person cannot enter eternal salvation while harboring an unclean spirit, because God's salvation includes total deliverance and cleansing from all forces of darkness; however, anyone currently afflicted can be completely freed, cleansed, and saved through the victorious power of Jesus Christ.
What follows is an in-depth Bible study exploring the nature of spiritual warfare, the impossibility of light dwelling with darkness, and the magnificent power of Christ to save and deliver to the uttermost.
The Deliverance and Salvation of the Believer: A Biblical Study
Introduction: The Reality of Spiritual Warfare
The journey of a Christian is not a passive experience; it is an active engagement in a profound spiritual conflict. The Bible makes it absolutely clear that our battles are not merely physical or earthly. We wrestle against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, and against spiritual wickedness in high places Ephesians 6:12. Because of this reality, individuals—even those who attend religious gatherings—can be subjected to the influence and affliction of evil spirits. However, the gospel of Jesus Christ provides total victory and permanent freedom.
Unclean Spirits in Religious Settings
You rightly point out that an individual can be in a place of worship and still be afflicted by an unclean spirit. The Scriptures provide the definitive example of this. In the very place where the Word of God was taught, there was a man with a spirit of an unclean devil, who cried out, recognizing Jesus as the Holy One of God Luke 4:33-34.
This demonstrates that merely being present in a synagogue or church does not automatically shield a person from spiritual bondage. However, Jesus did not leave the man in his afflicted state. Jesus rebuked the devil, commanded it to hold its peace, and cast the unclean spirit out of him completely Luke 4:35. Christ’s immediate action proves that His will for His followers is absolute freedom, not continued bondage.
The Incompatibility of Light and Darkness
When asking whether a person can remain saved while continuing to have an unclean spirit, we must look at God's requirements for His dwelling place. God is perfectly holy, and He requires His people to be holy. The Bible asks a series of definitive questions: What fellowship has righteousness with unrighteousness? What communion has light with darkness? What concord has Christ with Belial? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? 2 Corinthians 6:14-16.
The answer is that there is absolutely no agreement or fellowship possible. You are the temple of the living God, and God has promised to dwell and walk within His people 2 Corinthians 6:16. Because of this indwelling presence, God gives a strict command: "Come out from among them, and be you separate, says the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you" 2 Corinthians 6:17.
Therefore, a believer cannot retain an unclean spirit and remain in a saved, justified standing before God. To possess the promise of salvation and adoption as sons and daughters of the Lord Almighty, we must cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God 2 Corinthians 7:1.
Christ’s Absolute Authority to Deliver
There is no reason for any soul to despair, because Jesus Christ has absolute power over every demonic force. During His earthly ministry, He called His disciples and gave them power and authority over all unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and disease Matthew 10:1. He commanded them to go forth, preach the kingdom of heaven, and cast out devils, freely giving the deliverance they had received Matthew 10:7-8.
No case is too difficult for the Savior. Even when a man was possessed by a "Legion" of demons, making him exceedingly fierce and untamable, Jesus commanded the unclean spirits to come out of the man. The spirits obeyed instantly, fleeing into a herd of swine Mark 5:1-13. Jesus Christ cleanses the mind and soul, breaking every chain. Salvation is found in no other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved Acts 4:12.
The Final Condition for Eternal Life
As we look toward the end of time, the necessity of spiritual purity becomes paramount. Spiritual Babylon is condemned precisely because it "is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird" Revelation 18:2. God does not allow His people to remain in such a state. His urgent call is, "Come out of her, my people, that you be not partakers of her sins, and that you receive not of her plagues" Revelation 18:4.
When the time of probation closes, a final and permanent decree will be pronounced over every human being: "He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still" Revelation 22:11. To inherit eternal life, all filthiness and unclean spirits must be forsaken and cast out prior to this decree. The promise of the eternal city is reserved exclusively for the obedient and the cleansed: "Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city" Revelation 22:14.
Summary: Securing Total Freedom
A person bound by an unclean spirit is a captive in need of rescue, and Jesus is the mighty Deliverer. If a person finds themselves in spiritual bondage, the Bible gives clear, actionable steps to secure complete salvation. "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double minded" James 4:7-8.
By bringing every struggle to Jesus Christ in faith, the afflicted person is completely transformed. Though they may have been bound, through the power of Christ they are washed, they are sanctified, and they are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God 1 Corinthians 6:11. Salvation is a complete rescue, bringing the soul out of darkness and into His marvelous, pure light.
