Unveiling the Sanctuary Service: God's Plan of Redemption
Explain the sanctuary service.
AdventAI
The sanctuary service was a divinely ordained system that served as a perpetual reminder of the coming Savior and revealed great truths concerning Christ's role as Redeemer, Priest, and King. This elaborate system was designed to impress upon the people the holiness of God's appointed things and to foreshadow heavenly realities.
Divine Purpose and Origin
God Himself designed the sanctuary and its services, providing Moses with a precise pattern to follow when constructing the earthly tabernacle. This earthly sanctuary was not merely an arbitrary arrangement but a "figure of the true", serving as a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. The meticulous details concerning the garments of those who ministered, like Aaron's symbolic robes, further emphasized the sacredness and divine preference in serving God. The entire system was established in connection with the moral law, which formed the first condition of God's covenant with Israel.
Structure and Components
The earthly sanctuary consisted of a court, where people gathered and offerings were slain, and two holy places: the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place. Inside the Most Holy Place, within the ark of the covenant, rested the very tables of stone on which God had written His law with His own finger. The top of the ark, known as the mercy-seat, was where pardon could be found for those who had broken the law, through the sprinkling of atoning blood. This arrangement underscored the immutable nature of God's law, which is perfectly preserved in the heavenly sanctuary.
Daily and Yearly Ministrations
The sanctuary service included both daily and yearly ministrations:
Daily Service: Throughout the year, priests entered the first apartment of the tabernacle to perform daily services. This included the burning of incense, representing the prayers of the people ascending to God. The blood of sacrificial animals, which represented the transfer of the penitent's sin to the victim, was brought into the sanctuary to make reconciliation for the sinner. The daily ministry continually reminded the people of the need for a coming Savior.
Day of Atonement (Yearly Service): The crowning day of the tabernacle service was the Day of Atonement, or the cleansing of the sanctuary, which occurred once a year on the tenth day of the seventh Jewish month Leviticus 16:29-34. On this day, the high priest alone entered the Most Holy Place with blood, making atonement for himself and for the errors of the people, thereby removing their sins from the sanctuary Hebrews 9:7. This annual cleansing involved taking away all "the uncleanness of the children of Israel" and their transgressions that had been brought into the sanctuary through the year's ministry.
Symbolic Significance and Antitypical Fulfillment
Every aspect of the earthly worship pointed to Christ and the plan of salvation. The sacrificial offerings and the high priest's ministry symbolized Christ as the "one Mediator between God and men". The cleansing of the sanctuary was a figure of a greater work in heaven Hebrews 9:23-24.
Christ's Ministry in the Heavenly Sanctuary: After His death and ascension, Christ, as our Great High Priest, entered the heavenly sanctuary with His own blood, serving as a minister of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, not man Hebrews 8:2Hebrews 9:12. His work in heaven continues the plan of salvation, pleading the cause of penitent sinners and presenting His shed blood for them.
The Cleansing of the Heavenly Sanctuary: The prophecy of Daniel 8:14 states, "Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed." This prophecy, understood as 2300 prophetic years, terminated in 1844. At this point, a major transition occurred in the heavenly sanctuary's service, corresponding to the high priest's entry into the Most Holy Place on the Day of Atonement.
Investigative Judgment: The cleansing of the heavenly sanctuary is a work of judgment, often referred to as the investigative judgment. This work involves the blotting out of sins for God's people. It determines who has availed themselves of Christ's mediation and whose names remain in the Lamb's book of life. This judgment precedes Christ's second coming, as every case will have been decided before He returns to give His reward Revelation 22:12.
Finishing the Mystery of God
The cleansing of the sanctuary is closely related to the finishing of the "mystery of God". This "mystery of God" is the gospel, and its finishing signifies the close of the gospel work and the end of Christ's priestly intercession. When this work is completed, the gospel message will have concluded, and probation will end.
The sanctuary service, both earthly and heavenly, stands as a profound revelation of God's plan for humanity's redemption, guiding believers to the ultimate truth of salvation through Christ's continuous mediation and final work of atonement.
