It is a joy to walk through these sacred truths with you. The return of our Lord is the "blessed hope" that has sustained the faithful through every age. When we look at the scriptures, we see a beautiful, orderly progression of how God will finally bring an end to sin and restore His creation.
1. The Literal and Visible Return of Jesus
The sequence begins with the personal appearing of our Savior in the clouds. This is not a silent or secret event, but one of overwhelming glory that every eye will behold.
The Promise: "This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven." - Acts 1:11
The Sight: "Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him..." - Revelation 1:7
2. The First Resurrection and Translation
As Jesus descends, He calls for His people. Those who have died in Christ are raised first, and the living righteous are transformed to meet Him.
The Shout and the Trumpet: "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord." - 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17
The Change to Immortality: "In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed." - 1 Corinthians 15:52
3. The Destruction of the Living Wicked
While the righteous are gathered to the Father’s house, the wicked who are alive at His coming cannot endure the brilliance of His divine presence.
Destruction by Glory: "And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming." - 2 Thessalonians 2:8
The Desolation of the Earth: "Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste... The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word." - Isaiah 24:1, 3
4. The Millennium: Satan Bound and Saints Reigning
For one thousand years, the earth remains in a state of chaotic desolation, likened to a "bottomless pit" or "abyss." During this time, the saints are in heaven with Christ, participating in a work of judgment.
Satan’s Imprisonment: "And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up... that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled." - Revelation 20:2-3
The Reign of Judgment: "And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them... and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years." - Revelation 20:4
5. The Second Resurrection and the Final Conflict
At the close of the thousand years, the rest of the dead—the wicked—are raised. It is at this time that the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, descends from heaven to the earth.
The Wicked Raised: "But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished." - Revelation 20:5
The City Descends: "And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." - Revelation 21:2
The Final Deception: Satan is loosed and gathers the resurrected wicked to attack the city. "And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth... to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea." - Revelation 20:8
6. The Destruction of the Wicked (The Second Death)
As the armies of the wicked surround the camp of the saints, God intervenes. This is the final cleansing of the universe by fire.
The Devouring Fire: "And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them." - Revelation 20:9
The End of Sin: "For, behold, the day commeth, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up... that it shall leave them neither root nor branch." - Malachi 4:1
7. The New Earth
From the ashes of the old world, God creates a home of eternal beauty for His children. The elements melt, but they are fashioned into a perfect, sinless realm.
The Promise Fulfilled: "Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness." - 2 Peter 3:13
No More Sorrow: "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." - Revelation 21:4
🙏 Personal Application
Knowing that this world and its works will be dissolved in fire, we are called to a special kind of life today. Peter asks us: "Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness?" 2 Peter 3:11.
Our preparation for the New Earth begins in the heart today. By surrendering our lives to Jesus, we allow Him to cleanse our "soul temple" now, so that we may be ready to stand in His presence when He appears. Let us hold fast to the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, looking forward to that day when we shall see His face and reign with Him forever. ✨
