A Solemn Duty to Speak: Facing the Sunday Law Movement

Should we remain silent while God's commandments are trodden underfoot?

EGW: we must speak up when sunday law begins

AdventAI

It is a solemn duty for God's people to raise their voices and give the trumpet a certain sound as the Sunday law movement advances. We must not dishonor God by keeping silent while His holy commandments are being trodden underfoot.

The Duty to Speak and Act

  • Sounding the Alarm: Every minister and evangelist should put on the whole armor of God to work, watch, and pray as these movements intensify. We are to cry aloud and spare not, showing people where we are in prophetic history and the value of religious liberty.

  • Proclaiming the Truth: The message for this time must be presented in its attractive light, especially to those in high places and positions of trust. This involves explaining the real question at issue to disarm prejudice and interpose an effectual protest against measures that restrict liberty of conscience.

  • Using the Press: Books that reveal light on the great controversy, such as The Great Controversy, Patriarchs and Prophets, and Daniel and the Revelation, are to be widely circulated now more than ever. Had these warnings been properly distributed earlier, the Sunday-law movement would not have reached its current position.

The Nature of the Conflict

  • A National Crisis: When the United States abjures the principles of its government to enact a Sunday law, it will be a virtual recognition of the principles of Romanism, leading to a national apostasy. This legislative action forms an image to the beast Revelation 13:14-15.

  • A Deceptive Movement: The Sunday movement is currently making its way in darkness, with leaders concealing the true issue beneath a guise of religion and public morality.

  • The Final Test: The Sabbath is the great testing truth for the last days, acting as a sign between God and His commandment-keeping people Exodus 31:13. The last great conflict of the controversy between truth and error will be decided over this question.

Preparation and Wisdom

  • Humble Diligence: We are to be as men waiting for their Lord, not in idle expectancy but in earnest work with unwavering faith.

  • Discretion in Labor: While we must speak with boldness and assurance, we should avoid a merely controversial attitude and use "level-headed moderation" to ensure our efforts are not turned into defeat.

  • The Power of the Spirit: As the third angel's message swells into a loud cry, the earth will be lightened with God’s glory, and the unlearned will speak with convincing power that baffles the supposedly wise Revelation 18:1.

We must use every resource—voice, pen, song, and medical missionary work—to stem the tide of moral corruption and uphold the banner of religious liberty that has been committed to our hands. "The Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear" Isaiah 59:1.
