Temptation vs. Trials: Understanding the Spiritual Difference

Is your current struggle a trap to ruin you or a fire to refine you?

What is the difference between temptation and trials

AdventAI

Temptation is a solicitation to evil from the enemy of souls, whereas trials are circumstances permitted by God to manifest the true condition of the heart and purify character. While both involve struggle, they serve different purposes in the development of a Christian's spiritual life.

The Nature of Temptation

Temptation is the work of Satan, who seeks to lead the soul away from God and into sin.

  • A Call to Sin: Satan uses deceptions, worldly interests, and the indulgence of appetite to lead individuals to disregard the law of God.

  • Not Sin in Itself: Having temptations is not a sin; sin only occurs when the temptation is yielded to.

  • Constant Presence: During the entire period of our probation, we will be confronted by temptations from the powers of darkness.

  • Example of Christ: Jesus was tempted in all points as we are, yet He resisted every assault by relying on the word of God Matthew 4:4.

The Purpose of Trials

Trials are the "proving of God," designed to refine and strengthen the believer.

  • Manifesting the Heart: Trial manifests the real person; it reveals whether a Christian is building on the eternal Rock or sliding sand.

  • Purification: Like gold tried in the fire, trials are intended to burn away the dross of earthliness and dross of character 1 Peter 1:7.

  • Discipline: Trials are a part of the discipline in the school of Christ, teaching us to rely on God alone rather than the "arm of flesh".

  • Separation of Classes: In times of peace, evergreens and other trees look similar, but the blasts of winter reveal the difference; likewise, trials distinguish the true Christian from the hypocrite.

How to Overcome Both

Whether facing a trial of faith or a direct temptation, the remedy remains the same:

  1. Use the Word of God: Jesus overcame by saying, "It is written" Matthew 4:4.

  2. Agonize in Prayer: When trials rush in, go to God in prayer to receive grace and strength to overcome.

  3. Trust the Refiner: Recognize that God is watching the furnace of affliction, ensuring it is no hotter than necessary to consume the dross.

  4. Look to the Reward: Faith lightens our burdens by anticipating the crown of immortality at the end of the journey 2 Corinthians 4:17-18.
