Beyond the Pharisees: Understanding True Spiritual Righteousness

How can our righteousness possibly exceed that of the Pharisees?

AdventAI

In Mathew 5:20 Jesus says “unless your richtedtonlus is better” etc - how are we possibly expected to be better than all the written religious teachings?

Matthew 5:20

20 For I say to you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

To have a righteousness that exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees means moving beyond a mere outward observance of rules to a heart transformed by the grace of God and the faith of Jesus. While the Pharisees were scrupulous in their ceremonies and the letter of the law, they often neglected the vital principles of judgment, mercy, and faith Matthew 23:23.

Understanding Pharisaic Righteousness

The righteousness of the Pharisees was largely an external display characterized by several key failings:

  • Outward Formality: They were strict sticklers for rites, ceremonies, and human traditions but their hearts and lives remained corrupt.

  • Self-Sufficiency: They trusted in their own merit and good works, believing they had reached the pinnacle of perfection.

  • Lack of Love: Their religion was often cold, critical, and overbearing, lacking the tender compassion that pities the suffering.

  • Hypocrisy: They appeared righteous to men but were inwardly full of iniquity, a condition Jesus compared to whitewashed sepulchers Matthew 23:27-28.

The Righteousness That Exceeds

To exceed this standard, one must possess a righteousness that is both internal and spiritual.

  • The Righteousness of Faith: This is not a righteousness we produce ourselves through the law, but the righteousness of God which comes through faith in Christ Philippians 3:9.

  • Spirit and Life of the Law: True righteousness includes keeping the ten commandments in both letter and spirit, allowing the law to reach even to our thoughts and motives.

  • Inward Transformation: The grace of God acts like leaven, an assimilating power that quickens the soul and transforms the life.

  • Active Love: Real godliness is evidenced by how we treat one another; if we do not love our brother whom we have seen, we cannot truly love God whom we have not seen 1 John 4:20.

How This Is Possible

We are not expected to reach this standard through human effort alone, as the law was never satisfied with anything short of spirituality Romans 7:14.

  • A New Heart: Jesus taught that one must be born again of the Spirit to enter the kingdom, receiving a teachable heart and noble aspirations John 3:3-5.

  • Abiding in Christ: By receiving Christ and walking in Him, we are filled with His life, and His perfect righteousness is put in place of our sin Colossians 2:6.

  • Divine Example: Jesus came to illustrate the law’s precepts through His own example of perfect obedience, showing that the principles of heaven are rules for our daily lives.

  • Daily Connection: Through earnest prayer and a constant hungering after righteousness, the soul receives spiritual nourishment and the peace that rules the heart Matthew 5:6.

Ultimately, the word of God is the only steadfast foundation for our character and life Matthew 24:35. By surrendering the soul to God, a power no human eye can see creates a new being in His image.
