Understanding Secret Vice: Impacts and Paths to Overcoming
Can a secret habit truly destroy your physical health and ministry?
SECRET VICE Q: What is secret vice? Q: How does it impact the person? Q: How does it impact ministry? Q: How to overcome it?

Secret vice, specifically identified as self-pollution or masturbation, is a soul-and-body-destroying practice that involves the indulgence of lustful imaginations and the debasement of the physical and mental faculties.
What is Secret Vice?
Definition: It is a private, impure action and a "bewitching sin" where an individual pollutes their own body through the stimulation of sexual passions.
Root Cause: It often begins in the imagination with "castle-building" and dwelling on low, sensual, or romantic stories that inflame the passions.
Inherited Tendencies: In many cases, children inherit a "stamp of character" from parents who abused marriage privileges, giving the offspring a natural predisposition toward these disgusting habits.
Satanic Agency: It is a special work of Satan to take possession of the minds of youth, corrupting their thoughts to lead them into this self-destruction.
How It Impacts the Person
The consequences of this habit are widespread, affecting every aspect of a person’s being:
Physical Health: It drains vital energy, shatters the nervous system, and leads to a long list of diseases including dyspepsia, epilepsy, impaired eyesight, heart palpitations, and spinal complaints.
Mental Faculty: The mind suffers "permanent debility," resulting in a loss of memory, "sieve-like" retention, and an inability to concentrate or apply oneself to study.
Moral and Spiritual Ruin: It destroys high resolve and the strength of will necessary to form a religious character. The person becomes a captive, as helpless as a demoniac, and loses the ability to discern eternal things.
Relationship Impact: It fevers the imagination and leads to a lack of reserve, eventually resulting in wretched unions, fornications, or adultery.
How It Impacts Ministry
Presence of Sin: There are sinners in the ministry who are not "agonizing" to overcome; because God hates sin, He cannot work with them.
Loss of Influence: Men with noble talents and splendid qualifications can have their entire usefulness destroyed by this one secret defect.
Hypocrisy: Some may listen to solemn discourses on the Judgment and feel conviction, yet return to their favorite sin within an hour, becoming "Satan's most efficient agents" while masking their ways under a pretense of godliness.
Institutional Harm: Those addicted to this vice bring a "weight" to the church and can corrupt other minds within religious institutions, acting as stumbling blocks to unbelievers.
How to Overcome It
Victory is possible through divine power and a determined effort to reform the life and thoughts:
Purify the Imagination: The first work of reform is to restrain the mind from vicious directions and force it to dwell on pure, elevated, and heavenly subjects.
Active Labor: Indolence is a major cause of lust; therefore, engaging in useful, taxing physical labor is a safeguard that leaves less opportunity for the imagination to stroll into forbidden areas.
Dietary Reform: Removing "stimulating" foods like meat and replacing them with a simple diet helps remove the artificial excitement of the passions.
Earnest Prayer: One must flee to the "throne of grace" and plead for strength, laying open all the secrets of the heart to the "infinite Eye".
Total Dependence on Christ: We cannot overcome in our own strength; we must hide in Jesus and rely on the power of His Word.
Confession: Secret sins must be confessed to God in the "closet" to obtain pardon and cleansing through the blood of Christ 1 John 2:1-2.
Helping Others: One becomes an overcomer by helping others to overcome and by sharing the word of their testimony.
If you are struggling, remember that your condition is not hopeless, for there is no restraint to the Lord to save. If any man wills to do His will, he shall know the truth, and the truth shall make him free John 7:17John 8:32. Sin may "couch at the door," but through the grace of Christ, you shall rule over it Genesis 4:7.
