Understanding True Sanctification: A Lifelong Journey of Faith
Is true sanctification a one-time event or a lifelong process?
What is true sanctification?
AdventAI
True sanctification is the process of entire heart-service and willing obedience to the written word of God, resulting in a character that is in perfect harmony with the principles of His holy law. It is not a fleeting emotion or a theory, but a living, active principle that enters into every detail of daily life, transforming the entire man—body, soul, and spirit.
The Nature of True Sanctification
A Lifelong Work: True sanctification is not instantaneous; it is a progressive work that continues as long as life shall last.
Obedience to the Law: Genuine sanctification is measured by the law of God, which is the only correct standard of holiness. This includes a conscientious regard for all ten commandments, as the law is a transcript of God's character.
The Sign of the Sabbath: Keeping the seventh-day Sabbath holy is the specific sign of sanctification, distinguishing the true worshiper and acknowledging God as the one who sanctifies His people Exodus 31:13.
Harmony and Unity: It produces true unity among believers and manifests in a spirit of unselfish love and kindness toward others.
How It Is Attained
Through the Truth: We are sanctified through the truth, as the Holy Spirit impresses the duty of obedience to the written word upon the heart John 17:17.
Dying to Self: It requires a daily dying to self, where our own will and desires are surrendered to the will of God, even when it is unpleasant to our natural inclinations 1 Corinthians 15:31.
By Beholding Christ: By steadfastly beholding the Lamb of God through faith, we are changed into His image from glory to glory 2 Corinthians 3:18.
Health and Temperance: Because the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, true sanctification includes temperance in all things and the mastery of wrong habits, such as the use of tobacco or other defiling indulgences 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.
The Fruits of True Sanctification
Those who are truly sanctified will not make boastful claims of their own holiness or sinlessness. Instead, the more they comprehend the spotless character of Christ, the more they will see their own unworthiness and depend entirely upon His grace 1 John 1:8. The outward evidence of this inward work includes:
A meek and quiet spirit 1 Peter 3:3-4.
The fruits of the Spirit, such as love, joy, and peace Galatians 5:22-23.
The cheerful performance of even the smallest daily duties in obedience to God.
A life of constant prayer, humility, and contrition Daniel 9:18-20.
True sanctification is nothing more or less than to love God with all the heart and to walk in His commandments and ordinances blameless Luke 10:27-28.
