Typhoon on China’s Coast

THE typhoon which swept China's coast recently in the vicinity of Shanghai, with such a harvest of death and wreckage, did no serious damage at our mission headquarters, save in destroying some windows and injuring small shade trees. Many buildings in Shanghai were destroyed or severely damaged, the wreckage of shipping strewed the shore, and many lives were lost. Many of the vessels that sank carried not only the freight, but hundreds of the poor watermen and their families. The toll of death goes on, by war, pestilence, and the elements. How slow men are to learn the lessons of such calamities!
