When We Feel the Strongest

IRENE C. AVERY
O God, our God, who art our all, Our strength in weakness and our light When sorrow comes: to Thee we go, And know Thou wilt not turn Thine own Away. Thou God in whom we know All things are possible, all help complete, Be with us when we think we are the strongest.
Not when we feel oppressed and weak The tempter has the greatest power. Not when, kneeling in conscious need Of strength divine to help us meet Life’s tests, we hesitate and faint; But it is when we do not think of sin. We falter when we feel we are the strongest.
So keep us close to Thee. Remind Us that self-confidence means only death. Be near when all the world is bright And happiness and love seem everywhere; For it is then temptation softly grips Our hearts, and thoughtlessly we turn from Thee. Protect us when we think we are the strongest.
