The Free Gospel

SOME persons are enamored with their idea of a "free gospel." It means to them to pay nothing in church and take every benefit that comes along. It means, perhaps, to roam among the churches, knowing all the star-preachers and glib about their merits; to have children in three or four Sunday-schools and receive a line of goods from several Christmas trees; to have cake and coffee at social gatherings, and a bite out of every conceivable dish of church benefit that may be passed about. There are persons to whose character some of the above features will fit exactly and stick like crockery cement. If, on the other hand, they do give something to God's cause, they like to give as little as possible and get all they can. It would be like them, with closed eyes and a closed pocketbook also to meditate upon a free gospel while the unnoticed plate slipped along under the nose. We have no patience with some people's idea of the word "free."
