The Cost of Educating Children

A SWEDE wisely replied to an Englishman when he asked if it was not costly to take children off the streets and highways and place them in special schools, as is done in that land where illiteracy is almost unknown: "Yes, it is costly, but not dear. We Swedes are not rich enough to let a child grow up in ignorance, misery and crime, to become a scourge to society, as well as a disgrace to himself."
