Happiness

No miracle, but faithful daily bread Is happiness—whereon our hearts are fed From our own hand.
A present goal, some glad, unhoped surprise That folded ’neath a dark horizon lies In this near land!
A passing quiver born of light; The pain of yesterday, subdued to-night; A sudden smile!
Rest after toil; a home on some dear breast— So old the joys and various the quest That men beguile.
*—Martha Gilbert Dickinson, in Great Thoughts.*
