Story-Telling and Stories

by ARTHUR WHITEFIELD SPALDING
The ancient art of story-telling suffered a decline with the advent of printing, and in its late revival it has been left very largely to professionals. But story-telling is an indispensable art of the parent. No father or mother can hope to meet at all adequately the duties of child training without the liberal use of the story. Every problem of child management and development is involved with story-telling as a chief provision. Guidance, not repression, is the keynote of successful child training; and in this process the story, wisely selected and skillfully told, is one of the greatest factors.
“Christian Story-Telling” presents the science of this great art from the particular viewpoint of the Christian parent. It rejects myths, fairy tales, and other fiction as material, substituting therefor the wonder tales and hero tales of the Bible, nature, missions, church history, general history, and personal experience. The book presents its lessons in a familiar, conversational style, with liberal interspersion of illustrative stories.
This book is closely connected with the Christian Home Series, which depends upon it for the complete presentation of the subject of story-telling.
