Burmese Typewriter Invented

MR. F. D. PHINNEY, superintendent of the Baptist Mission Press at Rangoon, Burma, has invented a Burmese typewriter. It is a Remington machine, but does more than the ordinary Remington can do. Every Burmese type-setter must have in his case seven hundred distinct characters. Mr. Phinney produces all these on a typewriter having only forty-two keys, striking eighty-four characters. This has been accomplished by some very ingenious though simple device, by which the combination of several characters is possible. His invention has received a most cordial reception, even by the government.
