Troublous Times Threaten China

TROUBLOUS times are threatened again in China, as shown by the massacre of Chinese “reformers,” which is proceeding at the instigation of the empress dowager. The reformers are those Chinese who favor the introduction of Western ideas and institutions. Apparently the empress dowager and her advisers have recovered from the shock of the chastisement administered by the civilized powers, and consider the present an opportune time to begin another anti-foreign crusade throughout the empire. Such occurrences remind us that the work of giving the third angel’s message to these great heathen lands should have been begun during the times of comparative peace and quiet, which it is to be feared are now in the past, and that much of what is yet to be done will have to be accomplished under the most forbidding circumstances.
