Simplifying the Ten Commandments

THE school board of Edinburgh has decided to simplify the ten commandments, to be taught the children of the public schools. The effort to simplify the commandments has been repeated many times in the history of the world. There are always those who would revise the hard things out of the decalogue, and indeed out of the whole Bible. Yet duty is not an easy, but a difficult, thing. It is not simple, but complex. If a summation of the ten commandments be desired, the school board of Edinburgh, instead of attempting a condensation of their own, would do well to cite our Lord's synopsis of the law, as given in Matt. 22:37–40.— N.
