Ten Commandments Tablets Before Jesusby Jeff

Matthew 22:37

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Jesus answered the question about the greatest commandment by requiring supreme love for God with the entire heart, soul, mind and strength, meaning exactly what it says with undivided affection and complete conformity to His will. Together with love for neighbor as self, this states the two great principles on which hang all the law and the prophets, containing the principles of the Decalogue and the whole duty of moral beings. Done from the heart, these two principles are the condition of eternal life and fitness for heaven. That love forbids a divided heart and every idol, whether self, the world, riches, pleasure, or any human being put in God's place, and it must be a living active principle shown in willing obedience rather than mere feeling, belief, or outward worship. It sums up duty to God in the first four commandments while requiring love for fellow beings in practical kindness, mercy, and unselfish service, for love for God cannot be rightly claimed while love for others is broken.

Text and Historical Setting

The command to love the Lord God with all heart, soul, mind and strength is the first and great commandment, requiring supreme undivided whole-person affection and entire conformity to the divine will, meaning exactly what it says. It forbids any separation of the affections from God and demands that every idol be sacrificed and put away, with nothing allowed to divide supreme delight in Him. It sums obedience to the first four precepts of the Decalogue, draws His people out of the world's pleasures and friendship into trust and fearless obedience, and belongs together with love for neighbor, guarding against formal religion that forgets mercy, kindness, gentleness and forbearance.

Jesus spoke it in answer to a learned scribe or lawyer who asked which is the great commandment in the law. It came among plain intelligent answers to trapping questions put by Pharisees, Herodians and Sadducees, answers that brought precious light to the listening people. The same Jesus, clothed in humanity on earth, had already spoken the requirement to Israel from the pillar of cloud and fire, with an audible voice in awful grandeur from Mount Sinai as the standard by which to form character, leaving nothing obscure about salvation and loyalty to His law. It was given together with a living exemplification of the law determined in the councils of heaven.

It is not to be passed by indifferently but to be kept in the heart and transmitted from parents to children from generation to generation. It is to be taught diligently and talked of at home and on the way and at lying down and rising up, bound for a sign upon the hand and as frontlets between the eyes and written upon house posts and gates. So kept and taught it trains children to respect and honor God's holy and just and good commandments as the holy standard measuring character, and would prevent the sins and crimes now committed by adults and by youth and children. Disregard by parents neglecting training and by religious teachers ceasing to respect every precept and setting up their own standard dishonors Jehovah's law and brings great widespread iniquity making the days like the days of Noah and of Lot.

The command is presented alongside Deuteronomy 6:5 as the text for an address or discourse. One such discourse presents Christ's life, trial, crucifixion, death, resurrection, ascension and second coming. The great commandment of love in Matthew 22:36-40 contains all the light, and in the light of Christ's love the gospel is an open book received by true disciples in pure unselfish love without deceit or seeking advantage at others' cost.

Together with love for neighbor it states the two great principles on which hang all the law and the prophets, containing in them the binding force of the whole law and of all moral precepts in the prophets. Supreme love joined to unselfish love for others contains the principles of the Decalogue, expresses the duty to God in the first four commandments and duty to others in the last six, and reveals the whole duty of moral and fallen humanity and perfection of human character. The Ten contain that whole duty, with all other commands as specifications, and the two principles require not only belief but doing, so that when brought into the gospel all that hangs on them is brought also. Done and practiced they give eternal life and are the condition and only hope of eternal life, keeping believers steadfast under temptation, giving clearer and holier understanding of God, eternity and obedience with God as strength and portion forever, and forming through sanctification by truth a character acceptable and fit for heaven. Christ affirmed the lawyer's answer to what must be done to inherit eternal life and said to do it, presenting supreme love with all heart, soul, strength and mind as the one thing needful especially in the last days and as God's prescribed remedy expressed in practical godliness and genuine medical missionary work.

The idolatrous course of Ahaz violated that wholehearted love in the face of earnest prophetic appeals, so wrath was upon Judah and Jerusalem and He delivered them to trouble, to astonishment and to hissing. The kingdom suffered rapid decline and its very existence was imperiled by invading armies when Rezin king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to war and besieged Ahaz. People must give God first allegiance and fulfill their duties to Him. Warnings about rejecting the Son apply in every age, so those refusing Him as Redeemer must repent or face the foreshadowed doom. Love as the basis of godliness is urgently enjoined because the Lord comes in a little while, and as Jesus told the young man asking how to inherit eternal life, keeping the commandments sums supreme love under the first four and neighbor love under the last six.

Nature of Wholehearted Love

The command forbids any divided heart and any separation of the affections from God, requiring every idol and everything that separates from Him to be put away, with nothing allowed to divide or share supreme delight in Him, and advance in Christian life depends on forsaking idols and denying self. Whatever divides affection and takes away supreme love becomes an idol that blocks progress, for carnal hearts cling to idols and try to carry them along, yet there can be no advance until they are surrendered. This wholehearted love draws people out of the world to God and separates them from its pleasures, friendship and elements, since there is no concord between Christ and Belial, and those who love Him trust in Him alone and press on without fear in obedience. It is embodied in the first four precepts of the Decalogue, which allow no rival and demand spiritual worship by full obedience.

An idol is anything that divides the affections, removes supreme love, prevents full trust and confidence, or fills in the heart the place Jesus should occupy. It includes making the will, wishes, plans, desires and pleasures supreme instead of subject to God in heart, words and actions, and giving supreme affection to self, the world, riches, or any created or earthly thing desired and trusted as having power to help and do good. Pictures and treasures become violations when they tend to separate affections from God, are exalted above Him, and are worshiped in His place with the love belonging to Jesus. Self-love, love of the world, excessive affection for anything created, and pridefully making a god of self are idolatry because they draw the heart away from God.

God requires the whole person with unmixed motive and certain faith, and will accept nothing less, because He made all there is of man and offered a complete sacrifice to redeem body and soul. This total claim forbids gatherings for mere amusement that confuse faith and produce mixed and uncertain motive, and forbids binding engagements that cripple usefulness and make life unsatisfying and unhappy. It is broken by loving gatherings for indulgence in wit and merriment and feasting, where conversation centers on gratification of the senses, eating and drinking and pleasure-seeking, where Christ's presence is unknown and God is not in the thoughts. Keeping the precept means taking Jesus into every association, seeking to save companions, embodying His Spirit, and living as one of a peculiar people zealous of good works, surrendering all so as to speak with fluency and warmth to hearts and consciences ready to perish, for otherwise influence runs from evil companions to the professed believer rather than for good.

The love required is a living active principle shown by willing obedience to all requirements, not mere feeling or passion, not mere belief that God exists, not cold acknowledgment of His love and power, not outward worship while the heart serves idols, not sickly sentimentality or impure emotion, and not empty acknowledgment in words. It is pure and holy affection, a holy Christlike principle rather than feeling, received from Jesus as a precious gift, taught by the Holy Spirit, and strengthened by Him, and those actuated by it are neither unreasonable nor blind. Directed to Jesus it is pure and earnest, able to deepen and grow without limit without harming bodily health or mental strength.

The verse requires using all powers and capabilities to know God's Word and become acquainted with Him, with love growing in intensity proportionate to knowledge of His attributes and the value placed on Him. Loving with all the heart means obeying His law with pleasure and meditating on the eternal excellence of His character, a love that can never be hidden, studied in the light of His Word while living as those bound for judgment who must give account for words spoken and character possessed. This places duty to develop the intellect fully, to give whole mind, soul, heart and strength to learn duty to the Creator and glorify Him, for intellectual growth has no lasting value unless used to honor God and benefit humanity, yet through redeeming grace all that is required can be fulfilled.

Loving with whole heart, soul, mind and strength means surrendering the whole self to Him so that He directs intellect and affections toward what is divine and eternal, elevating and refining every power for holy service, with true humility and fitting dignity following. Giving all means turning from rebellion against His laws, living in harmony with Him, serving faithfully in response to His sacrifice, and using abilities and resources for the work He assigns rather than following personal plans or tying up means in worldly business. Those united with Christ give Him their whole being and obey the Father willingly.

God must have first place with undivided supreme affection because He purchased the heart and has first claim, and nothing is to be allowed first place. This wholehearted love makes Him supreme rather than second, puts His honor before personal pleasure, and leads to self-denial, loyalty and service, as in treating His house as first consideration and giving toward its needs rather than spending for gratification. When it truly reigns it is revealed in character in a pure and holy life, as with Daniel, whose life making God first impressed Darius, so that all took knowledge such a person had been with Jesus and is the light of the world. It rules out self-serving actions that weaken usefulness, influence, or others' trust in God, and calls for whole trust in the living God rather than wonderful confidence in finite erring man, ministers, or one man as conscience.

No human being may come between the soul and God as an idol, whether spouse or admired person. Love and emotional desire in considering marriage must not displace God's place or lead to acting without seeking His approval, and love for one another is rightly ordered when love for God who died for us is greatest, with each retaining individual identity and love between spouses following heaven's order. Love for a husband or wife must not become idolatrous or merely sentimental but must bear the character of divine love, for no human can sustain another's spirit in God's place. Admiration for another is measured by whether that person loves Jesus, is devoted to truth, and leads minds toward heavenly things, and loving God first lets Him through the Holy Spirit shape growth and character with the heart free of idols.

The verse means clinging to Jesus with every power of heart and soul and mind and strength, with decided resistance to the enemy, refusing to be placed where Satan can exercise control, and seeing and avoiding every snare. This wholehearted devotion decides whether a person is drawn to Christ and heaven or to earth and hell, and it is a life-or-death question in time of temptation and trial. It requires believing only the Word of God which makes wise unto salvation, instead of trusting human promises or the human heart which is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, resting on the fact that those redeemed by Christ's blood are not their own to dispose of as they think best and must give account in the judgment for use of God-given powers.

Seeking God with all mind, heart and soul requires drinking deeper from Him as the Fountainhead and living hourly in contact and earnest communion with Him, with principles of truth and righteousness and mercy abiding in the heart, and bringing tastes, appetites, habits and passions fully under control of His Spirit. This is the only hope for minds handling sacred things who lack close connection and do not discern His Spirit, bringing the depth of piety, discernment and enlightenment needed in the last days to decide righteously great questions of humanity, morals and religion. Unless grace transforms into Christ's likeness, His Spirit leaves like water from a leaky vessel, while full seeking enables lawful striving for the mastery, with heavenly angels at work to take hold of reasoning minds with power mightier than hosts of darkness, lest Satan steal imagination and affections if given a chance. Those who so seek receive words bringing light, blessing and joy, and where this love is kept, faith, meekness, temperance, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, love, joy and peace appear as fruit, showing those who have crucified the flesh with its affections and lusts and have what is honest and lovely and of good report.

God's claim on the whole person — heart, soul and affections — applies equally to professing Christians and to those who do not profess, so neglecting it does not remove guilt, and He calls everyone to give affections and devotion and obey cheerfully. Learning to live in harmony with others is a needed discipline helping form this love, and the whole character must be transformed to become like the heavenly Father and Jesus. Supreme whole-person love cannot be produced by human strength, natural temperament or sentiment, but only by divine grace and spiritual enlightenment promised through the gospel, received by faith in Christ so that the law's righteousness is fulfilled. By earnest endeavor, faith and earnest prayer a person is placed where he can share the divine nature and escape corruption through lust, and purification of mind and heart by the Spirit then makes supreme love to God and unselfish love to others possible.

Wholehearted supreme love, with seeking the Lord with all the heart and humbling the heart before God, joined with loving neighbor as self, is the condition for truth to prosper in the hands of believers and go forth as a lamp that burneth, and only then is it safe for God to work with and for His people. To lose it is to lose first love. This wholehearted love is connected with the deep moving of God's Spirit upon the human heart. Living by this love gives a clearer and holier understanding of God, eternity and obedience, with God becoming one's strength and portion forever.

Law Obedience and Duty

The command to love with all heart, soul and mind is the first and great commandment, and it sums up duty to God in the first four precepts of the Decalogue while the last six require loving neighbor as self rather than living for pleasure. The first four concern love to God and the last six love to others, together outlining the whole duty as told to the young man seeking eternal life. This wholehearted love allows no separation of affections and nothing sharing supreme delight, requiring every idol to be sacrificed and put away in order to advance.

God's law is a unified divine whole founded on love, so no commandment can be broken without violating love and no precept can be kept while another is broken. Departing from any part works unhappiness and ruin, and love underlies every precept with all the law and the prophets depending on the two commands of love to God and love to neighbor. The command is repeated to guard against formal religion that forgets mercy, condemning selfishness and requiring kindness, gentleness and forbearance.

These two principles are immutable as God's throne and eternal as His throne, the unchanging foundation and pattern for character shown in Christ's character and life, the only secure foundation and sure guide. By them character is tested and shown obedient or disobedient, and the law's claim remains unchanged to the close of time, applying universally and reaching beyond outward acts to thoughts and intents. Obeying the first by loving supremely means giving the whole required service, not merely acknowledging truth or offering ceremonial worship, but as an abiding principle pouring out in love and compassion to fellow men.

Loving God with all the heart requires keeping all His commandments and is impossible while breaking the fourth commandment standing in the center of the Decalogue concerning the Sabbath. Wealth and unwillingness to keep the Sabbath and lift the cross in self-denial block wholehearted love and prove one is not a true lover, and to claim love while disobeying means love is not perfected. True children live as an obedient family with filial not slavish fear, seeing duty pointed out and walking in light in harmony with His requirements during probation given to test them without compulsion, with reward to the obedient and punishment to the disobedient, while declaring the law unworthy to be kept makes one an enemy. Loving God is expressed through loyal obedience in spirit and letter showing the covenant relation, and righteousness including this love with neighbor love reveals God's character rather than outward ceremony, with all requirements binding in heaven and earth.

The verse requires not only belief but doing, and when these two commandments are brought into the gospel all that hangs on them is brought also. Knowing or teaching in theory is not enough; principles must be cherished and obeyed from the heart, with the law written on the heart not merely held in understanding or memory so that truth shapes the life. This wholehearted love giving mind, soul, heart and strength to Him is lived in obedience and service learned from Christ, making the yoke easy in uncomplaining submission.

Love is shown by making the commandments the living rule of daily life brought into the sanctuary of the soul, with inward love reaching thoughts, desires and dispositions and refusing to benefit self at another's disadvantage. Without this even high profession is hypocrisy and breaks the lesson of the pure Son of God, misrepresenting Christ and lying against the truth. It calls for purity and conscientious surrender of every sinful habit so truth enters with transforming power because its principles are loved, without which truth loses vitalizing power, sin strengthens, and even preachers live a lie without strength and efficiency.

Christ came to magnify the law and make it honorable, declaring not one jot of its claims would abate through all generations to the close of time. He gave a perfect example of loving obedience in His own life, and in the sermon on the mount showed the required love reaches beyond outward acts to thoughts and intents. That law still remains the believer's rule of life and the sinner's condemnation, and obeyed from love it leads to denying ungodliness and worldly lusts and living soberly, righteously and godly. Love for God and others is the spirit and life of the commandments underlying the law, so without true love outward keeping is incomplete and out of harmony with heaven, and the law cannot be truly kept while this love is ignored.

Ceremony and outward form cannot take the place of supreme love to God and equal love to neighbor as self. Christ's love in the heart softens it and breaks selfishness and desire for supremacy, as when the synagogue ruler preferred the suffering woman remain unhealed rather than accept mercy. Outward displays such as broad phylacteries and the commandments on the blue ribbon cannot replace obedience, for lives contradicting the law obscure its spiritual meaning while punctilious about rules.

Thinking oneself religiously right by a correct standard without deep abiding love in the inner life is Phariseeism, not Christianity. Busy activity, prayer, a touch of religious duties and leaves of profession are not religion and not fruit. The heart temple must be cleansed, refined and purified by the Holy Spirit with careful examination, and true principles cultivated and kept before the mind in light of the Word because principles decide destiny, proved by loving neighbor as self in unwaged good works of blessing where otherwise there are only leaves.

Love for God is expressed through obedience to principles as divine goodness and love protecting from evil, promoting happiness and grounding stable society. Fidelity to God requires fidelity to others, for the law protects rights and restrains oppression and disobedience, endures forever, and obedience is a pledge of eternal life. The verse states the first of two great principles of God's moral government, making obedience to the laws of being a personal duty where indifference and ignorance is sin. It obligates preserving the habitation in best health so all powers serve Him to glorify Him, forbidding acceptable service while diseased through wrong habits, with obligation to self not to injure the constitution and to neighbors to live healthfully and give correct views.

Keeping this twofold love is keeping His commandments, and only those keeping them enter through the gates into the city and have right to the tree of life. Such love cannot exist without self-denial and self-sacrifice warning the perishing and lifting up Christ in prayer and song. Those who so love need not be discouraged by troubles and annoyances of a fallen world because Christ has overcome.

God rightly claims gratitude, reverence and love for life and abilities to be cultivated to advance truth and holiness, and outward keeping cannot replace a devoted heart, requiring humility and contrition to find lacking perfection in Christ. Love for God as true holiness joined with neighbor love was taught by Christ Himself as highest Teacher as part of Jehovah's moral government, but the nation refused to obey, rejected their Ruler and taught for doctrine the commandments of men.

Love for Neighbor United

Love for God cannot be rightly claimed while love for fellow beings is broken in words and actions, for the first and greatest commandment engaging whole heart, soul and mind belongs with love of neighbor as self and condemns selfishness, requiring kindness, gentleness, forbearance, sympathy, practical godliness, honoring rather than criticizing, fault-finding and condemning, forgiving even foes after Christ's example, denying self, controlling passion and patiently bearing with others. This love is a positive command and part of the whole duty of life, not to be obeyed only when convenient, bringing every power under God's rule in Christ's unselfish example and unable to coexist with pride and selfishness. It is shown in losing no opportunity for deeds of mercy, tender forethought and Christian courtesy for the burdened and oppressed, and where nothing more can be done speaking words of courage and hope to those unacquainted with God who are reached most easily through sympathy and love, with promises of light in darkness, continual guidance and spiritual refreshing for those watching for opportunities to bring joy and blessing. Love for God must hold the rightful supreme place, yet it includes love for people made in His image, for the two great commandments spring from one root and keeping the first entails faithful obedience to the commandments governing duty to others, covering the entire ground of the law and the prophets as inward requirement no outward form or profession can replace.

Love for God belongs together with love for neighbor, others and fallen humanity; supreme love must be joined with love for neighbor as self, and those who so love God will also love neighbors. This love is shown through pure love for other people leading to ennobling motives, right thoughts and actions, service for others and work for those in danger of perishing, with Christ's pure sincere love as pattern and His teachings and example as standard rather than own desires, seen even in husband and wife turning from self-love to warm considerate respect in thought, word and action. Without wholehearted love to God love for neighbor also fails, for obedience requires the law written on the heart and truth as it is in Jesus enlightening the soul to do good, and neglecting supreme love makes obedience to neighbor love impossible. Supreme and neighbor love depend on coming to Christ and receiving His love, as He fills those yielding to His control and expresses Himself in loyal obedience to the Ten Commandments in spirit and letter showing the covenant relation.

The verse creates positive lifelong duty of disinterested benevolence to widows, orphans, fatherless, blind, deaf, lame and variously afflicted whom God in providence has placed in close Christian relationship to the church to prove His people and develop true character, including sympathy, fair impartial treatment, sacrifice of personal ease and advantage, personally caring, welcoming unsupported children into the home, and giving help rather than leaving work to institutions. The first four commandments hang upon supreme love to God just as the last six hang upon unselfish love to neighbor, so true Bible religion keeps both together, proving supreme love by feeling debt of love, kindness and interest to Christ in behalf of brethren and gratitude for His immeasurable love through deep unselfish interest, with self-denial and self-sacrifice making faith visible. This same law creates duty to make restitution for wrongs done to the colored race and to work actively to remove as far as possible lasting effects of enslavement, with no exemption for those who did not directly enforce slavery. Obeying supreme love with impartial neighbor love removes prejudice and separation between races and breaks down division between peoples.

Love is shown by obeying God's law through practical mercy seeing and promptly relieving needs without first asking beliefs, for such compassionate service is true missionary work revealing Christlike character, and claims of piety without righteous action have no value. All God's people share in this missionary work after the good Samaritan's example, with none excused from helping those in need nor allowed to withhold help for differing beliefs. Loving God is expressed by kindness and practical care treating every needy person as neighbor as one would wish to be treated; the Samaritan truly kept the commandments by caring for the wounded stranger, and in doing good to others love to God is shown. The whole duty is practiced through active unselfish service from the beginning of religious life, including clothing, feeding, warming, teaching, helping gain livelihood, seeking salvation of neglected people by personal labor and example, for warm words or outward religious expression without action does not fulfill the command, and doing of the Word with the Spirit's convictions goes in proportion to unselfish service.

Supreme love produces love for others as for self and makes believers one in heart and purpose fulfilling Christ's prayer, for love for God together with love for one another binds in unity with each other and with Christ in God. Explicit obedience would remove discord in church and family, calling for honoring rather than criticizing, finding fault or condemning, and where these principles are discarded selfishness, distrust, conflict and spiritual harm follow. When individual members love God supremely and neighbor as self, oneness in Christ comes as natural result without labored efforts to agree, members cherish love and unity as one great family, close ears to reports injuring a neighbor, take up no reproach against him through Christlike forbearance, and bear divine credentials testifying that God sent His Son, for Satan sows discord but Christ alone harmonizes disagreeing elements. Love for others grows from sure foundation rooted in God and comes from His Spirit as principle shaping character, governing impulses, controlling passions, overcoming enmity, envy and hostility beyond home and own circle, self-sacrificing, patient, merciful and forgiving; without it good qualities, refinement and honorable conduct are not true goodness nor readiness for heaven, while following Christ's serving and suffering example makes life a blessing and brings true happiness. Devotion to God is the foundation leading to unselfish interest and faithful engagement in life's duties.

Those who love supremely and neighbor as self cannot remain cold and unsocial, for such coldness withholds due love from God and owed love from others and violates obedience to law respecting rights; love as heavenly gift must be fostered and nourished, and affectionate hearts with truthful loving words bring happiness to families and elevate and uplift all they affect. Loving supremely with neighbor love is necessary for salvation in God's kingdom, shown in sympathy, love and united effort for others' salvation rather than aloofness or claim of superior holiness. Failing to love supremely and as self reflects spiritual death, while renewal by the Holy Spirit delivers from self-centeredness and transforms life. Supreme joined to neighbor love is the real essence of education, Higher Education, learned through hard study laying foundation for real knowledge, for reading the Bible intelligently and obtaining knowledge from the living God's Word, upon which hang all the law and the prophets.

That love is a tender plant to be cultivated and cherished with every root of bitterness plucked up to give room to spread and bring mind and heart under its influence; it is kept by only about one in a thousand and broken nearly daily by little love, suspicion, distrust, evil thinking and speaking, thinking worst of brethren, criticism and lack of mutual confidence, honor and respect. It is kept by watching for good, showing honor, respect, tenderness, love, courtesy, loving as brethren, being pitiful and courteous, and those educating themselves in this line receive richest blessings. Joined with neighbor love supreme love forms balanced character to be put into practice, binding believers as brothers while the Holy Spirit removes selfishness, self-sufficiency and self-esteem. Fulfilling this whole duty and two principles on which hang law and prophets brings light, joy, peace and gladness, shows preparedness for inheritance of saints in light, and living it in word, spirit and action makes a true representative of Christ rich for eternity.

Leaving first love is waning of love for God through failing to cooperate with Him, joined to failing neighbor love as self and failing Christ's prayer for unity, with loss of love for God bringing loss of love for brethren and springing up of self-love into new activity. Doing first works is fulfilling this love by living principles Christ carried into life and work, made possible because God dignified men by giving His Son and Christ allied Himself to humanity so humanity may ally with divine power, producing love wherewith Christ loved with forgiveness, tender sympathy and love owed as debt to every friend, neighbor and acquaintance. Restoration comes when churches repent looking at Calvary as standing pledge of boundless love and measureless mercy, through grace freely given and Jesus imparting the Holy Spirit shedding God's love abroad, abiding in Christ with Christ abiding in every heart regenerating in Christ's image with one Spirit animating all as living branches of the True Vine, healing divisions, ending envy and strife, and producing peace, love, mercy and benevolence as abiding principles proving God sent His Son. Love for Christ is shown by unselfish love for those around as the two great principles on which law and prophets depend, evidence of true religion and daily witness in Christ's favor.

Character Holiness and Growth

Carrying out the command converts the heart, humbles self, dismisses Satan and receives Christ's virtues, standing opposite Adam's heeding the tempter that brought humanity down from innocence and purity. Sound conversion plants pure faith and love to God joined with love to neighbor, making one happier than before and better in every way, well-balanced rather than fanatical or extreme, firm under severe testing among unbelieving family and friends, and manifest in well-ordered life, godly conversation and lifted responsibilities that show the change.

True holiness is wholeness in God's service, the condition of true Christian living as unreserved consecration and undivided service demanding heart, mind, soul and strength. Self is not to be cherished and living to self is not Christian, for love must be the principle of action as the underlying principle of God's government in heaven and earth and the foundation of Christian character, alone making and keeping one steadfast to withstand trial and temptation. Love is revealed in sacrifice, for redemption was laid in immeasurable sacrifice and Christ gave all, so receivers of Christ put His honor and glory first and are ready to sacrifice all for their Redeemer. This wholehearted service is shown through obedience to the commandments and cannot be separated from loving neighbor as self, together encompassing all human relationships and honoring the law while keeping self from supremacy and giving people proper worth as Christ's own purchased at infinite cost. Christ works in and through the truly converted to produce spirituality and heavenly affection, the Holy Spirit giving life that is communicated to others as pure and undefiled religion.

God's demands are met only by love from a renewed heart evident in a life following Christ, for profession without inward integrity does not satisfy Him. Without love for God and others outward obedience is not accepted, since loving with all the heart means supreme love with entire confidence, gratitude, worship, reverence and willing submission due to God alone. Outward religious forms and sacrifices of time or money do not fulfill the requirement to love and serve with whole mind, heart and strength when self remains unconquered and the will unsubjected to God's will.

Supreme love is the first and great commandment marking a true follower, engaging the whole person and proved by willing obedience in which reverence honors and glorifies God and finds highest happiness in doing His will. It summarizes duty to God in the first four of the Ten Commandments and with neighbor love gathers up the law and the prophets. Loyalty so understood keeps the spirit pure and obeys the commandments with whole heart, might, mind and strength.

Loving Jesus with heart, mind and soul joined with neighbor love keeps life from narrowness and makes it broad and influential, giving wide field for ability and influence. Supreme love so joined shapes piety and devotion, producing Christlikeness that makes believers lights whose character draws others to the truth. Practiced in daily actions it shapes every part of life and lets church members move the world by their influence. This light presents truth as in Jesus in humility and love rather than sweeping denunciation, communicating knowledge, lifting up the Redeemer and holding forth the Word of life.

Complete love is proved when the indwelling Saviour supplies a pure current of love maintaining righteousness, purity, holiness and perfect benevolence, bringing strong sympathies and heavenly principles into present work. It sets self aside, refines moral taste, brings passions under control through Christ's righteousness, lives the gospel in sanctified reason rather than impulse, and bears love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance. Cherishing and following the two great principles shows deep earnest love to God and humanity with elevated taste and controlled sanctified passions. Together with neighbor love this indwelling love produces righteousness, purity, holiness and benevolence lived out in fruits of character.

This love must be perfectly done through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, making the believer complete in Him, and it is the work of probationary time when character is developed and the inner spirit revealed by actions toward others. Seeking and serving the Lord fully with neighbor love is therefore necessary to avoid being weighed in the sanctuary balances and pronounced wanting at the grand review, where to be wanting is forever with no second probation. Complete love fulfills and perfects God's love in the soul, revealed by sanctification of soul, body and spirit, and kept with neighbor love it is the whole duty of man whose victory satisfies the gospel. It makes religion practical, requiring growth in every good work and continual advancement without despising small beginnings, fulfilling the law and naturally producing neighbor love that can even transform the money-devoted rich to prefer Christ above self.

Loving above all with neighbor love as Christ loved fulfills the divine law, and love is marked by purity, patience, kindness and sympathy. Loving as Christ loves shows birth from God and knowledge of Him with His love perfected, for dwelling in love is dwelling in God while coldness and lack of sympathy are contrary to God. Failure to love supremely and as self leaves members vulnerable to become Satan's instruments obstructing and hindering God's purposes. Those not loving so have separated from God through wicked works, so labor lacks courage, confidence and real results.

Genuine service requires wholehearted love joined with neighbor love shaping teachers to work for salvation, and this love with sanctified heart, mind and soul belongs to Christian life and character. Love to God joined with love to man must actuate ministers, and inspired by divine grace it makes a minister intelligent, earnest, thoroughgoing and a great power for good on which the work's best interest and success depend, far beyond indifferent slackness. God's law is a law of love to God and man, of harmony, unity and holiness, restoring the divine image in the fallen by constant beneficence and Christ's self-denial for truth. This is faith working by love purifying from selfishness, and seen in commandment keepers it gives convincing contagious evidence to worldlings, making believers of one mind and judgment who declare God their wisdom, sanctification and righteousness and draw nearer His law, with even disappointment and suffering sanctifying to work out His will.

Wholehearted love with all might, mind and strength cannot be lived without self-denial. Denial means ruling the spirit when passion strives for mastery, resisting censure and fault-finding, bearing patiently with others including a dull trying child, standing at duty's post though others fail, lifting responsibilities wherever duty requires not for applause or policy but for the Master with unwavering fidelity, and doing good and working patiently and cheerfully for others when inclination would serve self even if efforts seem unappreciated. Loving with the whole heart means setting affections on Him through daily consecration, humility and praise rather than public display, with meditation on His goodness and love centering affections and strengthening the soul, turning fully to Him while rejecting influences weakening purpose to do right to gain strength and confidence.

Wholehearted love is central to God's law of love to God and humanity, obedience making it visible while faith working through love purifies from selfishness. Genuine faith so works to purify the soul, requiring crucified self lest sin defile, for sin cost God's favor and must be loathed while Christ takes it away, and God's moral image is not restored while fostering self's image and uncleanness without diligent cooperation. Love for God is central to Christianity and the spring of love to God and others, and when Christ's love abides it produces growing refinement carrying out God's purpose to His glory and earth's peace and goodwill, expressed by following His example and practicing law principles daily to give the church influencing power.

Love to God joined with love to man is living proof of genuine belief, refining and uplifting heart and life, balancing conscience, purifying from defilement, killing indwelling sin and bearing fruit unto holiness in benevolence, kindness, tenderheartedness, sympathy and joy in right-doing that exalts Christ not self. Where doctrine yields earthliness, impure conversation, harsh Pharisaism, partiality and hypocrisy, faith is not of God's order. Loving supremely is covenant duty and highest standard with neighbor love, met by taking Christ's yoke and learning His meekness and lowliness, with purity and love marking the born of God who know Him. This supreme love belongs with obedience and expresses with neighbor love the principles on which the law rests.

God is to be loved supremely with the whole self through Christ, and as people yield to His control He fills them with His love making them a saving restoring influence. Devotion to God is the foundation of neighbor love, leading to unselfish interest in others and faithful engagement in life's duties. Loving supremely with neighbor love produces kindly sanctified affection and unity where the Spirit reigns, driving envy, resentment, strife, hatred and evil thoughts from the heart. Both principles were perfectly exemplified in the Saviour's life, for benevolence and unselfish love was His soul's life, and when Christ in infinite love and perfect purity is revealed His light exposes the heart's sinfulness.

Love must first center in God, and when He tries, purifies and refines it, it leads to holy concern bringing others near Christ rather than exclusive attachments neglecting others. Central to Christian life and service, joined with love for others it underlies the church's saving work, for members acting in harmony with love and confidence give the work greater force and power, since faith works by love and without such faith nothing is accomplished. Whole-person love joined with love to others is shown by honoring Jesus for His sacrifice and living God's will with love, kindness, loyalty and good actions. So kept with neighbor love it gives greater strength as sons and daughters, higher standing, growth in truth and more light in good works, while uncultivated it leaves soul want, no refreshing, absence of Christ's Spirit, works pleasing the enemy and unfitness for heaven until lessons are learned in Christ's school.

God's law is a moral mirror comparing actions with its demands, so neglecting neighbor love by indifference, injustice and uncaring shows disobedience, and recognizing such wrongs should lead to seeking God's power for Christ's kindness and forbearance. God proves people to reveal hearts and whether they love Him above all and neighbor as self, and those failing to love supremely are not acting under the Holy Spirit's sanctification. Loving with whole heart with neighbor love results from responding to the great love of the infinite sacrifice for souls, convincing of weakness and sinfulness and forming Christlike character by exercising unto godliness, wearing His yoke, carrying His burden in willing service as collaborators with Christ. Those serving and glorifying self in self-indulgence and self-pleasing, satisfied in own sufficiency, excusing responsibility, refusing sacrifice and self-denial, using ability for self and the world and living Christless while professing godliness, fail in this love and in comprehending the sacrifice, and by daily acts form a contrary character deciding destiny to depart.

Stewardship of Body and Means

Loving with the whole heart means desiring to give the best service of life and bringing every power of being into harmony with the laws that enable doing God's will, developing every power and restoring His image in body, mind and soul. Such love is inconsistent with offering a life weakened or defiled by indulgence in appetite and passion, and it requires keeping body and mind in harmony with the sanitary laws of the Bible so as to present a holy offering, a living sacrifice. Divine help and Christ's grace enable overcoming perverted appetites and reforming life, and only putting the feet in the path of righteousness and walking uprightly allows appropriating the rich promises and being kept by power through faith unto salvation. Hurtful habits such as using the narcotic bean and the poisonous herb unfit for acceptable service to Maker and fellow men and so break this high requirement including loving neighbor as self, for clouded mind, unstrung nerves, and body full of pain and disease prevent deep serious thought on the plan of salvation. Knowingly transgressing the laws of health forfeits sustaining grace, and conduct that enslaves the passions and damages body and mind is contrary to devoted service with all might, mind and strength rather than mere religious form while withholding the heart.

Lawful honorable work becomes sinful when excessive labor wears down mind and body until love for God and neighbor is neglected. Whatever receives the devotion belonging to God — especially the freshest hours, closest thought, study and skill — has become an idol, for God requires supreme love, not a divided heart. Loving God with whole heart, soul and mind means giving Him highest supreme affection above riches rather than allowing riches to become an idol. When love of God takes the place of love of riches, possessions are held as the Lord's stewardship to bless the needy and advance His cause, and this love also leads to love of neighbor, so that in this way a rich person can keep the commandments and enter the kingdom. The rich young man's attachment exposed by the command to sell and give to the poor kept him from loving fully, proving he did not keep the first four commandments which contain duty to God, and prevented loving neighbor as self.

Love of Jesus and love of riches cannot dwell in the same heart, for a heart set on treasure and swallowed up with earthly possessions loves possessions better than God and better than heavenly treasure. If riches are loved better than God, fellow men and truth, with hearts set on riches, eternal life is impossible. Truth set home to the heart by the Spirit crowds out love of riches until love of God so far surpasses it that the possessor breaks away, transfers affections to God, holds all as not his own, acts faithfully as steward, finds highest pleasure in rightly disposing of the Lord's goods to distribute to bless the needy and minister to the wants of His cause and advance His work. Only when love to God and fellow men so predominates can a rich man keep both great commandments and enter the kingdom and inherit everlasting life. Supreme love instead of loving and serving self requires giving a tenth of all increase and refuses to hoard for self, and it is broken when the tenth is withheld and treasures accumulated until no room to store them. Keeping it means using wealth as bounty lent by God to supply necessities of needy brethren and to do good, laying up treasure in heaven and becoming rich in good works, for accumulating for self and neglecting the needy disregards principles of God's law.

Supreme love governs money: every penny belongs to God and is to be used for His honor because all possessed belongs to Him, and the way money is used reveals whether love to God supremely and to neighbor as self is real. Money has value when it meets life's needs, helps others and advances Christ's cause. That love is fulfilled by unselfish use of money as stewards, investing means to set out plants producing abiding fruit in different parts of the world, forbidding selfish plans helping only self and own place, since advance depends on binding about such selfishness. Love is expressed in practice by giving resources to support God's work, which demonstrates love above all and also expresses love for neighbor. This practical manner means putting substance and banked means into circulation to sustain labor and establish institutions in destitute fields ripe for harvest, and those who so love can be a blessing helping instrumentalities in connection with others and using means for service even when not qualified to lead alone.

Supreme love joined to neighbor love is proved by work free from selfishness and pride, treating however large income, possessions, profit, pay, time, talents and opportunities as the Lord's money held in trust to be accounted for to Him who gives all, with not even the first thread of selfishness woven into His work. Such stewards give freely to proclaim the last message of mercy and prepare a people to stand in the day of God, God constantly proves workers to see if work is free from selfishness and pride, and the richest reward belongs to those who so prove love. That love governs use of all God gives and is expressed without selfishness or pride. Joined with neighbor love it calls for uprightness and moral integrity in daily dealings, and keeping this law with clear conscience requires divine aid and love of honesty for its own sake. God's law requires the heart's supreme affection for its Maker, meaning using what He entrusts not for selfish desires but to support His work, save the lost, honor Him and bless others, so wealth consecrated to God need not hinder Christian growth.

Loving supremely and neighbor as self is incompatible with choosing own way, will and pleasure or following selfish impulses. Love means recognizing time, service, affection and property belong to Him and giving self without reserve, denying self, taking up the cross and following Him, while choosing own will instead of God's way fails both loves. Faithful giving including the tithe expresses devotion, while holding back self or property conflicts with it, and possessions are managed as entrusted goods used in good works. This love must shape conduct in business and profession: charging exorbitant sums reveals failure to love God and fellow person, and dishonest practices are unfit for the kingdom. Wholehearted love leaves no divided affection between God and mammon and drives out greed for advantage and dishonest principles, including scheming, looking out for the main chance, buying below value and selling above value, and gaining advantage without considering others. Where that love is lacking dishonest principles remain, commandments are broken, spiritual injury follows, and indulged greed brings poverty unless there is thorough conversion.

Love for God and neighbor must guide every part of daily life including business and smallest as well as greatest decisions, and serving God cannot be separated from honest conduct in pursuit of money. The weightier matters of justice, mercy and love must not be neglected while attending to lesser duties, religion cannot be set aside for business, selfish pursuit puts worldly gain before God, wealth is not God's measure, and gaining earthly riches at soul cost is failure. This love is to govern even handling of temporal matters and use of entrusted means, and must govern every business transaction in God's work without business crowding out love. Where this love is missing selfishness rules leading to injustice, oppression, unkindness to the erring, neglect of needy, seeking large wages and financial sharpness, treating others unfairly, using God's money for self-indulgence and spending extravagantly when economy is needed, which cannot be reconciled with Christ's principles. Where love of Jesus is a living acting influence it controls human nature, sanctifies affections, brings actions into conformity to Christ's will, produces tender pure true compassionate treatment of all including erring and undeserving, and keeps the Ten from the heart in every line of work not by profession only.

Doing this gives life by putting away idolatry and refusing to make self an idol by serving self and grasping for money, refusing high wages while harder workers are held to low wages and robbed of hire through injustice. For managers in God's institutions it requires awaking, reasoning from high principles, breaking Satan's spell, seeking cleansing from the guilty record, and letting connection with sacred work increase practical piety, mercy, long-suffering, goodness, tender-heartedness, pity, courtesy and Christlikeness. Failure brings condemnation in proportion to responsibility accepted and injurious influence of example, because it represents Satan's attributes instead of the Father's, and God will vindicate His name with judgment as light and righteousness as noonday. For workers paid from the treasury this love means emptying the heart of selfishness, refusing highest wages obtainable, and not depriving fellow laborers and destitute fields of means. Those who so love see unworked fields, consider necessities of those breaking new ground, leave means for lifting truth's standard in new places in fulfillment of the commission to preach to all the world, and use means justly making provision for others, while taking unrighteous or excessive wages when equally faithful workers receive far less shows lack of love and affects final reward, when those placing high estimate on own merits will be least and earnest faithful unselfish workers with small wages receive highest reward.

Sanctification gives sensitive consciences leading to love God supremely and neighbor as self, moving away from selfishness, ambition contending for supremacy and covetousness toward justice and concern for others. Applied to wages it means not taking more from the Lord's treasury than is fair while fellow workers labor hard and receive less, and not grasping all obtainable in large wages while brethren laboring just as hard under heavy pressure receive little more than half, depriving others of wages they should receive. Those grasping unfairly from shared resources show they are not sanctified by the Holy Spirit but are blind, shut away from the Spirit, with detrimental influence, while one who loves will use entrusted wealth to meet needs of fellow workers and advance work in other fields rather than keep it under personal control or favor one institution at another's expense. Supreme love is disobeyed when a physician establishes another medical institution so close to the Lord's sanitarium as to draw patients away, especially when the Lord's endeavors to hold up health reform while the rival allows flesh-meat indulgence. Loving supremely requires converted heart and mind carrying out God's word and harmonizing with neighboring workers, and if blending is impossible moving to one of many other places available. Such love must be expressed in conduct, so a physician exploiting an afflicted patient for selfish gain cannot love supremely, because that conduct also fails neighbor love.

Love for God and neighbor must govern wealth, for riches test whether people love the Giver and neighbor as self. Using gifts for others' good and God's glory pleases Him and prepares for greater responsibility, and earthly treasure must not become portion, god or savior. Love for self spends money saved through health reform on personal possessions, while love for God and humanity consecrates those savings to the health reform cause as thank-offering. Loving supremely calls for whole-hearted unselfish life turning from selfishness to generosity, sympathy, fairness and nobility especially in caring for sacred interests, for taking advantage is contrary to love. God's law gives complete reliable standard for this service and treating others, because people cannot devise perfect right on their own, and love requires impartial fair dealings, for giving to God's cause does not make right what was gained by robbing others. Loving supremely with neighbor love is what God requires to be developed through grace during probationary life and proved by faithfulness even in least temporal matters, and disregarding plain directions and following impulse of own heart in spending and meeting wants shows failure and marks an unfaithful steward unfit for eternal interests. Wholehearted love is expressed in unselfish self-sacrificing love for others as evidence of sincerely following God's law and loyalty to Christ.

Whole love of heart, soul, mind and strength applies with all energies to labor for Christ for the world's salvation. Gospel workers must bring whole being and every ability to earnest action and use every talent, otherwise consumers not producers, continually seeking greater ability and grace knowing weakness without increasing supply, and this service bears fruit in souls brought to truth. Successful work begins with this wholehearted love essential for laboring for souls and genuine conversion, and those not so loving should pause until hearts are purified through obeying the Word. Eternal interests demand whole soul, might, mind and strength, leaving one called to minister in word and doctrine no room for mind given to worldly plans, enthusiasm over business, real-estate and mining stocks, or flattering imaginations of earthly treasure even if no sin for others. The mind must be on preaching Old and New Testaments, feeding the flock, pointing to heavenly inheritance and mansions prepared for those loving and keeping commandments, warning as faithful watchman souls imperiled by worldliness, and constantly digging Scripture to bring forth things new and old with Spirit power shown in heart, conscience, home and association. Serving can engage whole mind, soul and strength, and when a worker fully gives these in bearing burdens compensation should reflect time and labor without making work mercenary or granting exorbitant salary.

The worker's life shows love with all heart by taking no glory however responsible, following Jesus, remembering true success comes from God alone with every particle of praise His, receiving power and efficiency only from the Father, doing allotted work under Christ's generalship in living connection with Him as Head. The faithful servant loving above all and others as self expresses love through faithful use of entrusted gifts, humble service and readiness for whatever duty requires. Loving supremely with neighbor love means faithfully doing assigned work including small services, humble tasks and little opportunities without wasting time or refusing because wages are smaller than desired and without asking whether work brings much or little, but doing work and accepting wages offered. These duties test fidelity and keep souls warm while walking in God's Word and seeking His glory, for God judges character by principles in dealing with fellows, defective principles in common transactions weave into religious life, and one feeling too dignified for small wages should work for the Master and give earnings to advance work into the treasury as gratitude offering rather than be idle. That love with every movement true to God and maintaining principles governs financial conduct, requiring equity and sanctified judgment avoiding debt, avoiding heavier burdens than can be borne, and refusing courses bringing loss, dissatisfaction or unsaleable stock upon others. Joined to obedience it gives ministers vital power and sincere preaching because truth is solemn reality, and it is to motivate schools and sanitariums, where work under the Holy Spirit bears approval and impresses minds.

Such supreme love with neighbor love depends on faithfully using all powers given, for balanced use of mind and body supports health and pure thought and action, while failing to use those powers prevents conscientiously keeping commandments. Loving supremely with neighbor as self requires using all powers with balanced activity of mind, body and spirit, and none failing to use all can retain health, conscientiously keep commandments or fulfill this love. Pure thoughts and conscientious actions depend on conscientious thinking and conduct of study, and proportionate taxation of mental and physical powers through manual and agricultural labor safeguards against overtaxed brains and impure thoughts and actions.

Family Church and Society

Those who feel they are God's servants can be trusted anywhere, and citizens of heaven make the best citizens of earth, because correct view of duty to God gives clear perception of duty to fellow men. Parents are to bring up children in this love and fear as younger members of the Lord's family, teaching every act important for habit and character, so daily duties done in fear of God are done with fidelity and the life record can pass judgment's test.

God has claims upon children requiring supreme love carried into every department of life as duty, and mothers above all must teach this together with loving neighbor in little courtesies essential to happiness. Love for God with love for one another is to be encouraged, and tender affection is not weakness. Repressing affection can stifle a child's better nature and foster hard-heartedness, while divine love melts cold selfishness, and nurturing generous loving impulses develops Jesus' tender spirit and sympathy for others.
