Rejoice in the Lord

PAUL had learned this lesson of trust; he had learned upon whom to cast his care. And thus he had learned Christian contentment. “For I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” Phil. 4:11. And having learned this he could rejoice in the Lord. This the Philippians knew, for it was in their own city where Paul and Silas were beaten with “many stripes,” and in their own prison where the feet of these two men “were made fast in the stocks,” and where at midnight they “prayed and sang praises unto God. . . And suddenly there was a great earthquake, . . and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.” Acts 16. They knew of these things and could recognize the voice of him who, though still a prisoner in chains, could sound the cheerful note, “Rejoice in the Lord.” “Rejoice in the Lord alway; and again I say, Rejoice.”
