Note and Comment

A RECENT Paris dispatch states that the private convocation of Catholic bishops held “to advise the pope in regard to accepting the new laws for the separation of church and state,” has decided to advise the pontiff to submit to the French government in the matter; though there are still “advocates of resistance” who “will still seek to persuade the pope to adopt a recalcitrant attitude.” If the Catholic Church is such a conserver of peace as its spokesmen loudly proclaim it to be, why is it necessary to have a vote of a council of bishops to decide whether or not the church in France shall submit to the laws of the government? “Actions speak louder than words.”
