Forty Miles on Hands and Knees

BY R. H. LEECH
A HOT day was drawing to a close. We were hastening to the station to catch the evening train, when our attention was attracted by a man coming toward us as fast as he could upon hands and knees. On going to meet him, we saw a most pitiful sight. His feet were in such a condition that he could not stand upon them, and his countenance was distorted with suffering.
He had heard of our medical work. Leaving his wife and children, he had come forty miles on hands and knees, sleeping where night overtook him, and begging food by the way; in the hope that he might find relief from his sufferings.
Bidding our dispensary assistant to make him comfortable for the night, we hastened on. The following day, we found that it was a very bad case, of long standing, with little hope of recovery. He begged us to do what we could. He had gone from one dispensary to another without getting relief. He had come here as his last hope.
We pointed him to the Saviour, and bade him put his trust in Him, and told him what we could do would be of little avail without that. We treated him faithfully twice every day, and God heard and answered our prayers. In a few days, he was able to walk with the aid of a stick. His joy knew no bounds, and he cast himself at our feet, and had to be restrained from giving us the praise that was due our Saviour. As we talked to him from day to day about Jesus and His great love for us, his heart was softened.
