NIGHT

By Eliza H. Morton
*The night is time that evildoers love, The time when Treachery weaves her web Along the path of life, the time when beasts Of prey are prowling round. We feel the fear. God's word reveals the terror of the night. And yet one came to Jesus in the night To learn the way of truth, and holy men Have seen bright visions in the night. 'Twas long Ago a group of men stood round their Lord, And one went forth with murder in his heart, “And it was night”— yea, night for that poor soul. 'Twas night when Jesus sweat great drops of blood; And when He hung upon the cross, a night, An awful night of gloom, hung o'er Jerusalem. And it is night wherever sin is found.*
*“The morning cometh, and the night”— The night of an eternal death to all Who follow not the Lord. O, hail, all hail The nightless land when night will be no more! O, open all the windows of thy soul, Ye mortals frail, to God, and then the night Will fade before the glory He'll reveal.*
