Watch and Pray

THIS is the charge that is given us by our Saviour. It is no time now to be thoughtless and unconcerned, nor to give attention to trifling matters. Time is too short.
That little word “Watch” signifies much to us at the present time. Why are we so often put in remembrance to be on guard? We need to watch because “the flesh is weak, and the foe is strong.”
“Watch and pray. The tempter might be near us. Keep the heart with jealous care, Lest, the door a moment left unguarded, Evil thoughts may enter there.”
There is need not only to watch, but to pray. If Christ felt the need of earnest prayer for strength to meet the temptations of life, and to stand firm to principle, is it not more essential for weak human nature in these perilous times to follow our great Exemplar?
The moments are golden, and we need to advance in the divine life as never before. Let us pray for grace to heed the Master’s command that we watch “while it is called to-day,” lest coming suddenly He find us sleeping. H. E. SAWYER-HOPKINS.
