LOUIS LATAPIE, a newspaper correspondent of Paris, was recently granted an extended interview with Pope Benedict. The subject was the European war. Among other things the pope said, “The figure is gloomy.” And when asked, “May we expect your holiness to take the initiative to hasten peace?” he replied: “The hour does not seem to me to have arrived. I can only take action in good earnest in order not to weaken the moral authority I hold from God and which I must employ to bring peace back to mankind. But I am watching for the opportunity with a sort of fervor. I shall throw myself upon the first outstretched hand.” The pope seems to be possessed with the idea that he is to be a central figure in bringing about peace. There is a strong sentiment among men in general that the papacy must lead in the peace program. The world is turning in that direction. It is one of the most significant things that has occurred in all the ages. We will yet see the Old World united as one man under the banner of the papacy, and it will be supported in the New World by a Protestantism that will be in perfect harmony with it. And the whole structure will be a political arrangement that, while entirely out of harmony with God's plan and God's word, will nevertheless be a monumental fulfillment of one of God's great prophecies.
