Hear Ye Him

“And behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him.”
WHEN presenting the binding claims of the fourth commandment, we are frequently referred to this text of Scripture with seeming assurance that this relegates the Sabbath to bygone days. But consider a moment, dear reader. The text is found in Matt. 17:5. The occasion of its utterance was the transfiguration of our Lord in the presence of three of His disciples. The dark days of Calvary were just before the Saviour, and He greatly desired that His followers should understand His mission, and be strengthened for the severe trial occasioned by His death. This was the subject of the conversation of Jesus, Moses, and Elias on the mount; for they “spake of His decease which He should accomplish at Jerusalem.” Luke 9:31.
Now, rather than being anything against the scriptures that support the Sabbath, the text confirms them; for would they “hear Him” and be strengthened for Calvary’s scenes, they must give heed to His voice through Moses and the prophets. “Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them [the prophets] did signify, when it [Christ’s Spirit] testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.” 1 Peter 1:11.
“Then He took unto Him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished.” Luke 18:31. “Hear ye Him” further, dear reader: “Had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed Me: for he wrote of Me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe My words?” John 5:46, 47. It was Moses who, by the Spirit of Christ, some fifteen hundred years before that utterance on the mount of transfiguration, said, “The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto Him ye shall harken.” Deut. 18:15.
Much more might be said; but we have no objections to “hearing Jesus” on the Sabbath and all other questions. It was His voice that spoke the holy law which contains the Sabbath. A. M. DART.
