The Mother

By N. D. Anderson
O thou above whose gentle brow The bays of peace are woven now, Thou hast surcease from sorrow. Sleep through the night, in quiet nook, That thou, refreshed, may happy look Upon thy King to-morrow.
More honored in thy weary fight, Untrumpeted, than men of might And war with banners flying. Thou leavest, as thou liv'dst, unsung And unapplauded by man's tongue, A glory never-dying.
Dream not of us who marred thy peace, Nor yet of us who sought to ease Thy life's, thy clinging burden; For thou didst give thy rest to pray For us, the wanderers, to this day, O, rest then be thy guerdon!
