Scenic-Worship

By Fred F. Hanchett
The sailor drifting on a shoreless tide, Nor chart, nor compass, at his hand to guide; And he athirst on burning desert drear, No cooling spring his fevered eyes to cheer, May well despair. But who shall tell the woe, The floods of anguish that upon him flow When he, to still a yearning heart’s desires, In wordy creeds and scenic altar-fires Would find surcease of nameless fear and pain; Yet seeks the mystic unknown God in vain!
