Where Crime Decreases

THE Canadian criminal statistics for the year 1908 have just been published. It is not very inspiring to learn that crime in the dominion has increased by 180 per cent during the last ten years. However, it must give the temperance people of the dominion encouragement to find that while crime has been thus rapidly increasing throughout the country as a whole, the statistics for the only prohibition province in the dominion (Prince Edward Island) show a decline of forty-two per cent. While the isolated position of this province may help to explain this difference, the main cause of its comparative freedom from crime must be found in the banishment of the liquor traffic. The number of convictions for serious crimes was over seventeen for every 10,000 of population throughout the dominion, but was less than one and a half for every 10,000 in Prince Edward Island.—New York Weekly Witness.
