Watch and Be Ready

THERE is one thing we are told to be ready for and watch for; and that is for the return of our Lord. Over and over again He tells His disciples to be on guard, to be watchful. “Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning. . . . And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.” Mark 13:33. And do you know He seldom speaks of His return without adding this word, “Watch”? Many have ceased to expect Him, much less to desire His return; yet we are told three times in these few verses to “watch.” It is always safe to do what God tells us. If He should say, “Run,” run; if He tells you to “stand still,” stand still; and if He says, “Watch,” then watch. That is the true attitude of every Christian.
