Smiles and Smiles

By Francis M. Brockman
There are hearts that hide their sorrow, There are smiles that cover pain, Self forgetting, in their struggle, Other hearts to raise again From despair; and eyes that sparkle Oft are full enough to rain. When alone—ah, only God knows Of how swift the change takes place. For oft is the ache of the saddened heart Under the smile of the face. O, the hearts that act thus nobly, Shedding love and lightening care, Thus bestowing gifts far richer— Yea, than diamonds, gold, or myrrh, Ne’er will know how bright the crowns are, Waiting for them “over there,” Till with Christ they meet in glory. Then—ah, yes, a change takes place— There’ll be always joyous heart-throbs, As well as smiles of the face.
