The Christian’s Immunity

By Deloin Res Buckner
The viper’s lasso-coils, like ripples, clash While he extends his neck with arrow aim, When, leaping from his lair within the flame, Quick as a fatal nerve-like lightning flash, He strikes and leaves a venom-loaded gash In the half-frozen hand of one whose name Is Paul, who hurls it back from whence it came, Where slowly it cremates to leprous ash. The rude barbarians of Malta isle Think that the victim of the serpent’s ire Must once have spilled a life upon the sod, Which is avenged; but, when they stare a while, And see him stand unharmed beside the fire, They change their minds, and say he is a god.
