Power with God

By Delwin Rees Buckner
Beyond Brook Jabbok, Jacob looks upon His family's clustered forms, lit by the spark The camp-fire spits. Alone he stands—no; hark! What treads amongst the trees? A fallow fawn, Perhaps, which crops the dew-wet thicket lawn, Or strays in search of savory sapling bark, Or—arms of iron, thrust through the shade-blurred dark, Encircle him; but brawn is met by brawn.
The Orient sky is flowering like a rose, With neither, victor; when, through touch divine, Within the sweat-bathed Hebrew's throbbing thigh A tense, strained sinew shrinks, wherewith he knows His Foe, meanwhile bright angel garments shine, And craves the blessing He will not deny.
