California’s Disguised Sunday Law

Those who are working to secure a Sunday law in the California Legislature have practically given up the thought of securing the passage of the bill at first introduced; but they are introducing a new bill that is so framed that it seems to be meeting with quite universal favor. It is disguised under the cloak of greatly helping the laboring man who has to work in foundries and other factories where work is required seven days in the week. To oppose such a bill seems to put one where he is not in sympathy with the toiler. But the large corporations that would be affected have abundantly demonstrated their ability to evade all such laws that were not to their liking; and nothing would be gained except to strengthen the precedent for religious legislation. For, disguise it as you may, it is religious dogma that is at the bottom of all such laws. A few Sunday laws will not change the oppressive and controlling course of the big money power of this world. Attempting to regulate this power on Sunday will not correct conditions that are radically wrong from the foundation up.
