Short of Funds.

A despatch from Rome, dated September 11, states that the Vatican is passing through a financial crisis. Pope Pius is cutting expenses by reducing his staff as far as possible and lowering the salaries of some of the clerics. There has been a falling off in Peter’s pence. The pontiff is reported as saying: “Certainly we live the simplest life. The church will never perish, but it is passing through a critical economic stage. The expenses are enormous. There is no fixed revenue to meet them.” It would seem to the outsider that with the vast, needless wealth of the Vatican a good deal of it might be turned into money to meet necessary expenses.
