Man in Death

WHEN the great civilizations of heathendom departed from God, they lost sight of the great truths concerning man and his destiny. They lost sight of the one only Saviour; lost sight of the resurrection of the dead. The germ of hope, however, was still left in them; and therefore they were brought to believe, through the deceiver of the world, that man did not die, but still lived on; and therefore they glorified death. The poets of Christendom even have followed the poets of ancient heathen times. The Bible represents death as the last enemy which shall be destroyed, but poetry has sought to glorify the evil thing, as, for instance:
“Thank God for Death, bright thing with dreary name; We wrong with mournful flowers her pure, still brow.”
“There is no death; what seems so is transition. This life of mortal breath Is but a suburb of the life Elysian Whose portal we call Death.”
“Death is but a path that must be trod If man would ever pass to God.”
The real question which the thoughtful mind and heart must ask is, “What is truth?” Are all these traditional teachings which have come down to us true? Is death but another form of life—a higher life, as we are taught? Do the dead come back to us? Is Modern Spiritualism based on actual truth?
Our next issue will continue the subject of the study, under the following or similar headings:
The Consequence of Sin in Man;
Man's Condition in Death; Is He Conscious?
The Resurrection of Man; When Does It Take Place?
There will be other articles of intense interest. This will be No. 6 of our Bible Study Series. It isn't too late even now to subscribe for the whole series, for we have some back numbers to supply those who may wish to get the whole study.
