Earth's Funeral

IMPOSING is the disked Sun's funeral, As far away across the western wave He sinks to rest within his wat'ry grave, And Darkness comes and spreads her pall o'er all. Both gorgeous, sumptuous, yet too sad the sight; For I must think of other days,—in flight Thoughts seem like birds, that in the night Do flutter, quite uncertain where to light. A sight more tragic, solemn, comes to view, A time when sinful earth, so crimson-stained, Will purify within consuming flame, And other worlds will know—the faithful true, Where Sin has never had his realm and reigned— That God is just, and hallowed His name.
