Manchester’s Remarkable Ship Canal Aqueduct

A tremendous feat of engineering has recently been completed in Manchester, England, where the Manchester ship canal is crossed by an aqueduct which flows over a drawbridge. The aqueduct weighs 14,000 tons, and has a water-tight gate at either end. When one of the big boats in the canal below finds it necessary to pass the aqueduct, the gates are closed and the water is held back while the bridge is swung, just as any other bridge would be moved. When the boats have passed, the bridge swings back and the water in the aqueduct flows on its way.
