The King’s Garment

OFTENTIMES we are glad to get off some of our old, dirty clothing and put on clean and new apparel; we feel the change and it is gracious; others see the change and it is pleasing to them. So we are told in the Scriptures to “put off the old man,” and “put on the new man.” Between this old and this new there is a vaster difference than between the old and the new clothing. We are to “put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication.” And we are to “put on . . . bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, that long-suffering.” And to make the new dress look exactly right we should “above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfection.” This is the grandest adorning that any soul can possibly wear; this is the apparel selected for us by the heavenly King; this is the garment for the wedding, woven in the loom of heaven; it is the adorning specially prepared for us by the hand of God and placed by His very self upon His chosen.
