Stable Souls Needed

God wants stable people. The words of the wise are, “My son, fear thou Jehovah and the king; and company not with them that are given to change.” Prov. 24:21. It is exceedingly disappointing to embark in a work or enterprise with those who stay by for a little time, and when matters require real effort or look discouraging, and they see or hear of something else which seems more promising, “pick up and leave” you alone in your work. That is why Paul did not want to take John Mark with him. He had left the work at one time when he was most needed. Jesus asked concerning John the Baptist: “What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? a reed shaken by the wind?” There are many shaking-reed souls. John was not one of them. “Reuben, thou art unstable as water; thou shalt not excel.” Jacob was forced to declare of his impulsive, “given-to-change” first-born son. There are many Reubens. There are many brilliant souls in this world, in God’s work, who would win great success were it not that they are given to change. They need to let the grace of Christ crucify the irrepressible desire and do the “one thing” until they know God has called them to change.
