The Aerial Torpedo

Now that the conquest of the air has been achieved, the men of war seem to be monopolizing the opportunity of its service, and a despatch from Washington, dated August 14, declares that a weapon of destruction more effective than the submarine torpedo and more far-reaching than the heaviest gun, is the aerial torpedo invented by Emile Berliner at Washington. It is a winged engine of warfare. It will be provided with aeroplanes and motors, with gyroscopes for keeping it in balance, and would be directed against the upper parts of a ship. A small aeroplane, Mr. Berliner tells us, would carry a charge of cordite of from 150 to 250 pounds, and no ship could move fast enough to escape its attack. The cost of construction would be small. Thousands could be built for the amount that covers a single battle-ship, and the speed of a hundred miles an hour is possible.
