The Worst City

“The Worst City.”—Sometimes New York is called “the worst city in the world.” This is simply because it is bigger. The New York World well puts it: “We have more kindness and more crime, more selfishness and more sacrifice, more heroism and more cowardice, more luxury and more squalor, than any other place in America, because there are more people; but the proportions are about the same as in any average village;” and this is true. Unregenerate human nature is about the same everywhere, and a great mass of people, congested as they are in New York City, made up in part of the criminal cast-offs of the Old World, have a great opportunity to show more of crime and more of the uncontrolled passions of the human heart.
