Scattering the Living Seed

THE American Bible Society, with headquarters at Bible House, Astor Place, New York City, has just published its ninety-third annual report. It has been a year of advancement for both the home and foreign agencies. By colportage work more than 186,600 copies of the Scriptures have been distributed in the United States in at least sixty-five languages. In foreign lands the work of the Society has been very successful. In Cuba, 20,726 copies were circulated; in Porto Rico, 6,400 copies; in Venezuela, 1,144; in Mexico, 23,655 copies; in Central America, 10,651; in South America, except Brazil, Venezuela, and Colombia, 48,874 copies; in Brazil, 49,151 copies; in the Levant, 126,086 copies; in Siam, 48,073 copies; in China, 594,952 copies—the largest annual circulation ever attained; in Japan, 80,022 copies; in Korea, 24,206 copies; in the Philippines, 68,170 copies.
Mrs. Russell Sage has made an offer of five hundred thousand dollars to the Society, provided the Society raise an equal sum, the entire amount to be a fund from which the interest will be used for the advancement of the work of circulating the Scriptures. Vigorous efforts are being put forth to raise this amount by the end of the year. Donations for this work help in the advancement of a very worthy cause, one of the most effective in giving the Gospel of the kingdom to all the world in this generation.
