Singing Without Thought

There is a good deal of singing of hymns that is after the same character as the following anecdote indicates. A bishop heard a cook singing a hymn one morning and congratulated her on her love of Christian hymns. The cook explained that she sang that hymn always when she boiled the eggs. Four verses for hard-boiled and three verses for soft. There are many who sing to time and tune without any thought of the words they are singing. The singing in the worship of God ought to be as intelligent and as truly spiritual as is the preaching or the praying. All of them, it is sad to say, become largely form with many.
