Report on the Italian Earthquake
By Editor
In the Outlook Department will be found a late and very interesting report of the awful earthquake which occurred in Italy the 28th of December last. It is from our own Rome correspondent. On the occurrence of the earthquake, he immediately set out to visit the stricken section. He was told that it was utterly useless for him to attempt it, but through the kindness of the American Ambassador who granted him a letter, the Prime Minister of Italy gave him permission to go. He had the good fortune on reaching the Island of Sicily to fall in with the American vice-consul, with whom he lodged while he was on the island. The vice-consul himself had been through the recent earthquake at Valparaiso. Our correspondent presents news at first hand, having himself experienced the awful condition of the stricken district. We are sure that our readers will peruse with great interest the matter which he has sent. It will be continued in our next issue. The excellent views sent will also be appreciated.
